Default I need another fix...

Lately I have seen several very nice looking N/A Imprezas (19??-2001) around, and I realize I could probably sell my '02 WRX and have plenty to get an older Impreza. I love doing swaps, and I prefer the look of the older Imprezas. From what I understand, slipping an EJ20 into one of these guys is not a big deal, or is it (or even the STI motor)? Or do I turbo the stocker? But my main question is drivetrain compatability/durability. If I could buy a nice example+engine swap+mods to reach 300hp-ish, for $15k, that would suit me. I would like to avoid tranny swappin' if possible. Given 15 large, and similiar goals, what would you do? (I am just begining to look into this particular gen. so any pointers will be appreciated) Thanks.
P.S. I post here, because I figure those who really know these cars will be found here.

You could get a 99 RS for as low as $7000 and a v7 engine and tranny swap for $8000. I'm planning on getting a 99 RS tomorrow ($8500 after taxes) and getting a complete v6 STi swap for it for about $8000.

Add a rear lsd and you're all set. 99's have open rear diff.

Good plan though.

a full swap is the way to go if you want that kinda power, the stock motor and tranny won't take to it well at all, by time you got the turbo kit, your motor built or swapped with an sti shortblock with built rs heads, and something done with the tranny, you'd be looking about the same price range as a swap, the only pita from what i've seen in the swaps is the wiring, that i'd find something else to do

stock tranny with 300hp might be cuttin it close i say, but yea its pretty cheap now to do a engine swap just takes some time to get it right
