Question PDE downpipe w/cat vs Cobb downpipe??

Hello Everyone,
I am working with my local tuner on a good downpipe to go with my Greddy Evo catback exhaust. I am looking at getting the PDE downpipe w/cat for a great deal of $600 or the Cobb downpipe. The PDE I can get next week but the Cobb has a wait of 8-10 weeks. Does anyone have any info on these Downpipes? What DP do I get?

Thanks,
Matt

I ordered my Cobb downpipe w/cat. July 7 and still don't have it. They said it will still probably be another month. Hope this helps.

I love my PDE... great sound, beautiful quality, great power increase. Taking it off my WRX and putting it on my STi next week.

I honestly can't imagine what would make the Cobb piece worth a 8-10 week wait over the PDE.

Thanks for all the help. I just talked to a guy who has a Tanabe downpipe that he got for $360. Does anyong know much about the new Tanabe dp for our cars? Is it any good? The price sure sounds much better than the PDE or Cobb.
Thanks
Matt

i think thats pretty much the going price, not really a deal. I like the fact that its both 3" and catted, but not for that price. If you want the cat just weld one into another pipe, thats my eventual plan when I ditch the intermediate pipe that contains the 3rd cat.

The PDE's are on the more expensive side as mentioned (some catted DPs out there are pretty cheap), but you can't beat PDE's quality. I have yet to hear of a bad/defective product come out of their doors unlike virtually all of the other manufacturers. Obviously this is only one selling point, but their stuff is really first class.

The main reasons PDE is a bit more expensive?
1. Hand made in Los Angeles - beautiful TIG welds throughout
2. Strict QA - every piece is perfect and they do scrap stuff that doesn't meet their standards
3. An expensive, high quality 3" Random Technology metal catalyst is used
4. Low volume versus mass produced parts because of the above three points

I sell PDE stuff so I obviously have a good opinion of them - do your research and choose which best fits your needs/desires for your car!

Matt

PS - the price mentioned above is not the going rate - they list for $100 more than that.

I do think the PDE looks like a very nice quality piece without a doubt. And the price does seem like a good deal. However I have to agree with Una, save the extra $200 and go with the Helix. But, I think the price Una mentioned is the non-cat version, so if you want the catted version it will be about $100 more. And after some long thinking and lots of questions that Max at Gruppe-S was kind enough to quickly answer through email at 2am, I will be ordering the catted Helix DP today. Also, please don't forget to let us know which one you decide to go with and give your thoughts.

The latest news on my downpipe choice. I can get the PDE downpipe w/cat and a cobb accessport for $1150. What do you guys think? Is this a good deal and is it worth it?
Thanks,
Matt

Only you can say if it's "worth" it

I have the Cobb catted DP and have been happy with it. Cobb's wait situation is crazy. I actually ordered mine a LONG time ago. They said 6-8 week wait on 4/1/04. I was ok with that. At about 8 weeks I called them and they said another 6-8 weeks. I cancelled the order. Lucky for me they had a screw up with the cancellation and I got an email on 9/16/04 saying they were trying to ship my downpipe, but my CC was not working. In the time from the order to ship I had closed that account and it was no longer valid. Got it squared away and now it's installed. So, my wait was 24 weeks

I think Cobb is getting better now after a lot of growing pains. I get the feeling they were car guys who got into this thinking they could design or sell parts. Car guys. I think the demand was more than they expected and they were quickly overwhelmed. I think they are now taking measures to ensure things get back on track, but it took some time. I could be wrong about all of this, but that is my feeling. I think they are very nice, very helpful, decent guys. I am not making excuses for LONG lead times, I hate them. I will probably order an AP again someday when I have the extra money.

the same numbers as any OTHER DP its not like we are talking F1 here DPs just arn't that differnt

a: your not mounting it on your wall to look at
b: the major performance gain is removing the primary DP cat (not bell mouth ,not the third cat, not the uppipe cat) the difference between the $150 hks and the $900 brand X is not not worth the $$$
c: i am a advocate for a high flow cat making the $400 helix catted DP by far the best deal on the market .. cobb is a great product but the supply issues have killed him

You say the same #'s as any other dp, but what might that be? Is it 5hp 10hp 50hp? Does anyone have this setup and what do you all think about the stage 2 accessport?
Thanks,
Matt

As far as these downpipes, another post had a guy who dynoed his STi before and after putting in his Cobb catted DP and saw an increase of 20hp/20ftlbs... NOt sure how that translates to the non-STi WRX...
