I am looking for a short shifter that is about that same height as the stock RS shifter. It looks to me like the lever that comes with the STI complete shifter/linkage kit is. I thought the Graham Goode shifter was the same as the STI and it looks very similar, but when they are laid next to an RS shifter the STI looks to be the same overall length and the GG looks like it might be shorter. I have an RS lever in my Outback right now, and I don't really want the shift knob to get any lower than it is now (which rules out most of the short shifters). I have a line on a GG at a good price, but I would like to confirm that it is about as tall as an RS shifter

get the Cobb or STi replica from larry.
they are not with the linkage, therefore, not too expensive, and the stick is actually as long as, if not slightly longer than, the RS shifter. but don't worry, the throws are significantly shorter... |

Thanks guys. I am sure Kartboy's shifters are great, but like I said I don't want one significantly shorter than the stock RS (it would put my hand too far below my elbow when I use the armrest :^). I just want the throw reduction. I am not considering the shifter with linkage, but just the shifter (probably from somebody who switched to Kartboy).

The Kartboy isn't lower. It's the throws that are shorter. This is accomplished my moving the linkage up the shift lever.

yes, the Kartboy is DEFENITELY lower.
I've driven cars with both. It's very noticeable when driving it... AS for the RS and STi being the same... ONLY the linkage is the same. The shifter is different, therefore giving shorter throws. That is the reason why I suggest the STi replica or the Cobb, because it's just the stick, not the linkage. |

skidplatz,
Thanks, but the picture you posted shows is being about 1/2" shorter :^) I really wanted to keep the shift knob about where it is now... Doug |

If you look at the picture again you will see that it looks lower because they are centered on the linkage not the ball which is the bottom of the shifter. From the ball to the top it is only a very small amount shorter if any.

skidplatz,
For some reason I was thinking that the linkage pivot point was what determined the height (even though I have changed one of these out before). You are, of course, correct in that that ball is the fixed point. Doug |

*decides to chime back in*
Again, when actually installed, and you use a Kartboy, you will feel that it IS a bit shorter than the stock shifter arm. The ball is the fixed point, yes, but it doesn't matter. Your best bet, go to a meet, and you will find one of each installed in people's cars. You can then decide for yourself. |

Get a cheap shifter like the Kartboy or (in my case) the STI replica from Cobb or imprezars.com
If you then find the shifter to be too short, get a different shift knob to fix that. Much cheaper than spending $250-350 on a setup that you don't need. |

Looking for a short throw shifter huh? Well, why don't you guys check out this site:
www.rev-labs.com The shortshifter they have is very nice. I have this one and the shifts are short and crisp. I really love driving with it. Check it out! |

Well I got a Graham Goode shifter for a good price and swapped out the RS shifter I had in my Legacy Outback. The GG is actually a little bit taller than the RS which is great for me; I definitely didn't want anything shorter. Wow! The shifting is now very short, notchy and positive. I think I picked up a little bit of a humming/buzzing through the shifter with the swap. I also have the Cusco bushings. It isn't very noticeable so I don't mind. I am happy

i actually had a shifter long enough to take a picture of it. All 4130 ChroMo, CNC turned. i put one in my car and i like it even better than the older ones. they weigh a touch more than the OG ones. i think the extra weight makes it shift even better. silky smooth and ooo so short ![]() tom@kartboy.com www.kartboy.com |
