Unhappy Another one bites the dust...

Well, instead of just sympathizing with all the folks who are part of the dot-com implosion, I can now empathize. You guessed it, folks. The company for whom I work announced today that we will most likely be closing our doors on monday. No joke. At least I have a good amount of money saved up. I guess I knew what I was getting into when I signed up with a start-up. Rats, no more scooby snacks for a little bit. I hope I don't have to sell my car. I'll sell my friggin' house first.

Something that will NOT cheer you up...

The Starbucks across the street from where I work (Yea, I'm a "in-the-closet" yuppie), hired some new guy. I chit-chatted with him for a couple of minutes while waitin' for my Iced Mocha, he told me he was a network administrator, was laid off 6 months ago and hasn't found a job anywhere (sent 40+ resumes the night before). A year ago he had no problem getting offers, now he's working at Starbucks to cover his some of the bills.

Diz, I hope the best for ya in your job search. I hope the job market is not as bad as it sounded from the Starbucks guy.

The company is Vsys. We were producing a Softswitch. All is not lost, however. I have been coding for some time and I still think there is room in the market for experienced C++/Java/OO monkeys like me.

Ro - Believe me, man, I have thought of it. I want to go back to Ft. Fun so bad I can taste it...

That's it! I'm changing my major tommarow!!

I'm beggining to think that the only way to really be "secure" in this world is to do you own thing. There is absolutely no loyalty today on the part of employer or employee. Running your own business isn't easy and you might fail, but if you fail at least you know you gave it you best shot. Plus, some hotshot CEO can't decide to cut you to further his bonus. I'm not saying this is a solution, but damn, I.T. sure seems dismal right now.

Diz, Brat and all the other dot-bombers- Good luck in finding a new gig.

Default Sorry to hear

Paul,

Sorry to hear about the job. I know how it goes as I went through something similar in the oil & gas industry several years ago. Anyway, on the bright side, it seems like when something like this happens something better always comes along. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for both you and Brian (Bratmantlz) and if I hear of something I'll give you a shout. We are undergoing a major re-org here at CSU and haven't hired people in months. I'm sure that when the re-org is completed they are going to need to fill IT vacancies. Take care.

Sorry to hear Paul... this job market really sucks now, I know.

It seems I'm almost the only computer programmer on this forum that's still employed.

Later,
Tom

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate it. I am going to begin the job search in earnest today. Luckily, I was coding before the whole dot-com thing and my skills are not limited to the "latest trends".

Diz,

It's a shame about your job.... Also a big shame, but I think MCI (still) has a hiring freeze at the moment

Still, you could try us? Or maybe try some of the consulting companies? Comsys?

If you think I can be of help, just e-mail me.

I'm in the same boat.

I was working with an ISP that announced huge changes and people dissapeared.

I've been looking but haven't found anything.
I'm looking into attending bartending school and starting doing that to pass the time.

atleast you should be able to collect en-employment.

a while is still better than my situation..

my previous employer decided to deftly fire me just after announcing restructuring..

so I have been denied compensation.

Yay.. and my boss was a friend..
believe me.. no one can screw you harder than a friend.. Never work with them... or for them.

Default File Unemployement

Have any of you guys filed for unemployment yet?

I personally, have never done it. A couple of friends told me that if you file for employement, your bills are pretty much covered. You have to file, show them ALL of your bills and they write a bi-weekly (could be monthly) check that will cover most of your butt until you get a new job.

It is NOT welfare, they review your situation every couple of months and cut-you off when you get a job.

Man I am sorry to hear about that Paul. We just had another round of layoffs at LSI last week. We lost one guy from MY group alone. Kind of makes we wonder. I like to think that I would be one of the lower people on the totem poll to get laid off with me being a semi-new-grad and cheap labor (comparatively speaking) but I am actually starting to get worried hearing about all these people I know getting laid off. I know when the market gets out of this slump and they start hiring again that I could almost for SURE get you a job doing java/C++.

Before the hiring freeze the software team had 3 offers out to people for Java/C++ and they all backed out for other job offers!! So I know we are in need... it's just a matter of when we get rid of this hiring freeze.
