so, what? You needed a set of speakers for your bathroom, but still needed to do something fancy? This is so unlike you to be getting excited about speakers costing less than $56,787.

I'm scared and confused.

There are two types of systems I like. One is overpowered solid state with massive speakers that put out gut wrenching dynamics. The other is super efficient speakers powered by 3 watt single ended triode amps that makes it sound like you are "there".

Anyhow, I thought some of you guys would like a to try a cheap DIY speaker system that would blow away mass market circuit city speakers. It's like giving filet mignon to neanderthals.

BTW, those particular full range drivers in the picture cost over $2000. Excluding the cabinets. Great sound can be had by using a pair of $30 audax speakers, however.

I knew you would appreciate it!

I want to build a pair as well. There is a certain Radio Shack speaker that is supposed to work extremely well, but it has been discontinued.

Radio Shack 40-1354's http://www.decware.com/forums/Zen_Triode/posts/108.html

Also, the Radio Shack 40-1197 which is rumored to be OEM'd by Fostex.

BTW, I found the perfect amp to go with the Voigt Pipes:

You could try the Moth Cicada drivers which sell for $350 a pair, they have a higher Q than Lowther which actually makes them better suited to pipes or ported enclosures. They also don't have the nasty upper midrange peaks of most lowther drivers. I have a set of the Moth Audio Cicadas, great cheap little speakers. I have heard probably over a dozen DIY pipes, most sounded pretty decent.

I was thinking about those drivers, but it kinda puts this project into the Real Dollars category.

Have you heard the Fostex unit?

Cool looking speakers IMO.

I'd hit it.

Perhaps I'll do this and power them with my chip amp. I still need to finish my Silver Flute project

You know, as soon as I have some time, I may have to look into some of your DIY Audio projects, JattKM.

I might try a pair of these if I can convince the fiancee/WAPCE that 76" speakers are "neccessary".

I need them, really.

welp, for anyone that wants a really cheap project, go with the radio shack full range units, IF you can find them... next would be the Audax mentioned in the website above.

If you want to spend a bit more money, the Fostex FE166E driver has been getting ALOT of good reviews when used with a Voigt Pipe.

Bump,
would the above amp work well in conjunction with http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=290-045 those speakers. Also how would I hook these up to the amp and the reciever? 10ga wire and banana plugs? ...Ive never used an amp before so im sort of confused

what's special about this? It's something about the cabinet design that allows you to use cheapo speakers and still get great sound? Is this something new? I must agree the ones in the picture are quite horrendously ugly.

$30 full range speaker with a songle driver that supposedly sounds good. i think that's the appeal.
