Default Ny ej18 starter is messed up.

I swear I will never have anyone else in my car other then my GF, Anyways my friend was just telling me how his wife let one of her kids use her car and they did something to it, so it wont run anymore. And so i'm listening and so we run in the food store, to make a long story short...

I come back out to my car, and stick the key in, and turn it to start it, and nothing happens! the Dash warning lights dimmed a little, but their was no starter sound.. So with my annoying friend who was getting on my nerves acting like I knew what was happeing, I look under the hood, and it was pitch black so I really could not see anything, and so I hit a few wires, and so I try again, and No dice..

So I messed with the wires again, and this time I waited Min before I started it, then I go back in the car, and try and start it and it starts... So I had no time to check the next day when it was light out, because I was headed to Seattle, and anyways my friend calls me to tell me that the car did that again.

So Anyone have any clues on what it might be?

Did you hear a click at all when you turned the ignition. You may need to be outside the car, or stick your head outside the window to hear it.

If so, it's the starter solenoid contacts.

Here's some info and pics

here's some additional pics (starter solenoid pics towards the bottom)

Sounds like the soleniod to me... Napa or the like can rebuild starters for hardly anything.

Yeah try this first. I thought my alternator died which killed my battery. I installed a new battery and when the car didn't start, I thought my starter might be dead too.
I cleaned the battery terminals in a water/baking soda solution and filed them down to the shiny metal. Put them back on, hooked everything and it started.

You can get new solenoid contacts for like 10 bucks.

Hmmm Sorry I typed that so fast.. A day before I left for Seattle, Anyways i'm home now and it seems fine. I think I'm going to need a new battery before winter, last year took a toll on the battery it was slow in starting. and the Lights dim when you use the power windows.

No Clicks at all, just the dash lights dimmed just a tiny bit as I turned the key to the on position.

Hmm, I guess if it happens again, open the door and see if you hear it clicking. The intermittant issue is acting just like the solenoids.

I had this issue, it was a crappy batt. I would get the normal starter click and basically that same stuff was happening. Filed down the contacts, same. Replaced the batt and it was fine. Try it out.

hmmm My Battery is a diehard, and looks to be on it's last leg.. I'm not spending $109 for some Optimum battery, and Autozone and Pepboy's I dunno about those other brands they have so thats why I held off. I'm not sure how many CCA I need for the winter time.

And lol I don't think it was wise to clean the battery contacts with an S.O.S. pad

sos pads, steel wool, sandpaper, whatever you gotta do....there has to be contact with the terminals with minimal interference (i.e. no corrosion getting in the way). Seltzer water or soda works great in a pinch if you're stuck somewhere and it's dead.

My vote is battery, possibly alternator, then starter

Well When I first did this like 2 months ago the postive terminal had alot of Corrosion on it, So I used the Sos pad on that. I'm not sure if that did any good or not But I think it's the battery I live in the Northeast here so I'm not sure how many CCA I need 800?
