Default The 400 Mile Club - Are You In?

In the spirit of the high fuel range threads at Fred's TDI Club, where talk of 700 to 900 miles per tank of diesel is common, I've been working toward a more reasonable 400 mile range.

Finally achieved it this weekend on yet another road trip to Montreal. Got the full 28mpg, about 90% highway, speeds of mostly 75-85mph. Pretty good for a barn-shaped car with giant mudflaps and a big 4-cylinder gasser. Would have been better with a lighter foot, but I'd still be driving home from Montreal.

So, are you in?

do you do 400 miles before the light comes on? or 400 miles.... period.

I'm driving to NYC this weekend from Ann Arbor, MI.

maybe I'll hit it. any notes on where cops hang out would be appreciated.

400 miles period. In my case above the light came on at 386 miles and I filled up at 401.

If you're worried where cops hide on a highway you won't hit 400 miles on a tank.

wahddya mean? you mean cause I'll be going too fast? no I go 75-85.. so I should be ok, but I still worry about where the cops are cause of insurance.

I broke 400 a year ago driving to NYC when my car was completely stock. AC and cruise on the entire trip. Not sure what stage 2 will do.

If I run straight 87 octane with the stock airbox, stock intake, and stay at 55, I can get 440 miles on one tank of gas easy.

Tips to get into the 400 mile club:

Turn down the boost (if you can)
Keep it between 55 and 65
Use Cruise Control
Shift early (I shift my Legacy at 2,250 rpm in econo mode)
No sudden changes in throttle position
Keep the throttle light, only at 25% or whatever is necessary to accelerate
Let off the gas early and downshift instead of using the brakes if possible

I usually do those things in my normal driving, unless I'm in a hurry.

I once did about 350 when I was stock. Now I have a hard time getting to 200. $2.25 for 94 octane and 16mpg is starting to hurt.

With my current mods and tune....if I stay under ~1450F on the egt on the highway...regardless of what speed that ends up being...I get ~26-27mpg....past that and it's ~22mpg or less....

With your tips above I'm sure 440 is possible, but driving 55mph is no fun.

400 miles a tank ... Damn, I wish ... I'm lucky if I see 250-280 miles a tank ... Granted all my driving is city streets, and lovely back roads ... It just doesn't lend itself to economical driving styles ... Well, that and the fact that I drive like an a**hole ... But hey, how can you help it, when like the wife says "The WRX just seems to flatten out going around a corner ... You think you're going too fast, but it just wants more ..." Don't we all want more ...

I use to be lucky if I got a 100 miles from my 66 shelby I average about 320 before I fill up in the WRX, the best was my 96 Toyota Paseo that averaged a minimum of 450 a tank...god I miss that. Our 2000 Rodeo gets about 220 a tank

I like to see 400 one day. I had an old job that was 95% highway. My best tank was 377 on 14.08 gallons. So If I kept going that time, I woulda made it. But with a new job, I drive 3 miles a day and my mpg is down to 19-20. Oh well.

Filled up last night at 380.8 miles and still had 1/8 tank left. I don't shift before 3k rpm, I don't drive slow, and I love passing on the two lanes. I cycle the AC, keep the windows up, and keep my intake air as cool as possible (CAI, TB bypass, closed off warm air from the fenderwell). Also have Cobb exhaust.

I have hit 400 a few times in my 04 OBS. But generally, I get a lot less then that. There have been several times that I have been close to getting 400, but as soon as I get into Baltimore, it all goes to hell.

I used to drive stock honda accords. I got 400 all the time.. but man were they boring miles. I don't mind the fuel consumption of my wrx. its fun. Cheaper than disneyland too.

340-350 is the best I've done in the wrx. but .. that just happened to include serious amounts of spirited driving through the mountains.
