Impreza WRX STi Blown front speaker on 05 STi, warranty or DIY?

The speaker on the front passenger door came blown but I don't know if I should have the dealer replace it (grease monkeys and screw drivers carelessly ripping the door panel off comes to mind .. ). I can replace them with some decent 6.5 speakers from my other car. What would Opra do? Better yet what would you do? BTW what size are the front and back door speakers?

If you have the stock Radio get the dealer to fix it. It is pretty easy and your only concerns are the clips that hold the panels on and the plastic that is glued to the door. They should be good enough to properly replace that stuff.

Real easy to do. Do this whether or not you plan on upgrading the speakers. This way you have a fullset to put back on later if you want to or sell a full set on ebay.

Also buy a spare pack or two of clips. They are cheap. I think it is like $2.48 for front or back doors. When you are ready to replace your speakers you will have them handy.

Also when you are ready to replace those speakers there is a company (that I do not have bookmarked on this computer) that sells adapter rings and cable adapters for the speakers. Maybe someone could give a link to that site for you.

I have a '05 STi and I had my door panels off to pop out two door dings. I am pretty sure the front speakers ar a little larger than the rear.

There is a very good thread on the subject of door panel removal and replacement in this forum.

Good luck

Here's the link: http://www.iaperformance.com/
They make different thicknesses of spacers to accomodate different speakers' mounting depths, and have info on their site to help you pick what you need.
I agree about having the dealer replace the OEM speaker. Then, later you can pick some aftermarket speakers and run some speaker wire into the door, install sound deadener, the works. Don't mess with the back speakers -- it's not worth it, just set the fader 100% to the front.

I'd say get aftermarket. I replaced the rear speakers in my '05 and was amazed at how crappy the "upgraded" Subaru speakers were.

You can fit a 6X9 but try and get as shallow a speaker as possible and you will probably need spacers

The door panels pop off pretty easy but if you're not comfortable with it take it to a reputable stereo shop.

imo,
buy the shims, sound deaden the doors.
buy some 6.5 components.
put the crossovers under your seats, or run them to the trunk if you have an amp set up planned.
rewire the door with a nice 4 wire bundle
get happy.

The front is 6.5" spacers do help.
Rear 5 1/4"

I have a set of Pioneer 3-ways in the front, just made it without a spacer, but much better than the factory paper pieces of $h1t.

Do you know what the Pioneer speaker depth size was?

if you have the other speakers just laying around, why not put them in? get the adapters and go to town.

It's a little involved because the speakers are in another car..

I see, I thought they were "from" another car, not "in" another car.

you could just get the part from the dealer, but I'd probably just let them do it if you're keeping stock parts.

No problem, . I just want to avoid the risk of sloppy dealer workmanship, but would like the "free" speaker. I will probably get the dealer replace it because if the radio goes bad I can imagine them telling me the warranty is void because of aftermarket speakers..
