Default Monster Cable's Thuggish Behavior

Back in 2002, Monster Cable's lawyers filed a lawsuit against Mike Shkolnik, who was in the business of selling monster paraphenalia, such as masks, costumes, etc. and who had registered a website called monster.biz.

After word of the lawsuit reached the audiophile community and Monster Cable was excoriated for such thuggish behavior, Monster Cable dropped the lawsuit and Mr. Shkolnik was given an apology by Monster's COO Irene Baran.

Apparently Monster Cable hasn't learned anything from that experience and the latest victim of their corporate thug lawyers is a mom & pop operation in Oregon that sells vintage clothing under the name Monster Vintage.

A trademark does not grant unlimited rights. Particularly with respect to common words as "monster." However Monster Cable's corporate thug lawyers are under orders to litigate against any and every use of the word "monster."

This is nothing short of legal thuggery and harrassment.

The folks at Monster Vintage don't have the resources to hire trademark attornesy to fend off an attack from Monster Cable's $300 million a year deep pockets so publicity is their only hope.

Don't let these thugs get away with this!

You can express your opinions directly to Noel Lee at nlee@monstercable.com

P.S. You can get more information on the monster.biz lawsuit at http://www.madmartian.com/legal and information on the Monster Vintage lawsuit at http://www.monstervintage.com

I’m just writing to express my thoughts concerning your actions against Monster Vintage. I own monster cables for my playstation and they are good stuff. However, if you are in the business of persecuting every business that uses the word “monster” I will probably choose not to support your product anymore. I live in Oregon, and the economy here is rough enough as it is. Monster Vintage doesn’t need to spend money in court to defend their name from you. As I understand it they are in a completely different industry and are not a threat or competitor to you. Nobody is going to confuse their product with yours, or make any associations detrimental or otherwise concerning your company.

Lay off.

Monster makes an HDTV adapter for the Xbox that costs $60. It gives you component video output and... get this... stereo RCA jacks for audio. Want an optical output to get Dolby surround? That'll cost ya another $40.

$100 total to get the same functionality and same quality as the MS OEM HD kit that costs $20 (if you're lucky enough to find one).

Monster cable is the Bose of the cable world. In other words, overpriced junk!

Awesome inexpensive alternative?

I heard this conversation at BestBuy:
Customer (C): So I need a cable to connect my printer, which one do I need?
Sales guy (SG): Well we have these two. One is regular, but this Belkin has Gold Plated contacts!
C: So what's the advantage?
SG: Well with this cable the signal will travel better and your printer will print faster.
C: Aha.... <puzzled>

Me:

Monster cable can DIAF!!!

They did go after monster.com. Look at the very very bottom of the monster.com page.

They went after Disney for "Monster's Inc". I think Disney's response was, "What? We'll ****ing bury you." So that went away.

Wait. Monster Cable can DIAF because Belkin makes gold-plated printer cables?
