No, but Monster Cable marketing uses the same deceptive marketing tactics.

it's not just the marketing.

at compusa, we paid like $10 for a gold plated belkin cable... which we then sold for $49.

the retailers use the cables to get their margin dollars, period. we'd make like $0 when we sold a printer, $3 when we sold some paper, $20 when we sold some inkjet cartridge, and $40 when we sold the cable

it's retail, suck it!

You, as a reseller benefit from Monster Cable's deceptive marketing campaing which makes people (who haven't taken high school Physics) believe in the superiority of their product worth $40.

Pure marketing.

what marketing?

I can honestly say I've never seen an ad for monster cables. I may not be looking in the right places.

people pay more for perceived value... it's an easy sell. "you just spend $3000 on the TV, you're not gonna skimp on a $50 cable are you?"

Hell, if some other company put cables on the shelves next to Monster that had flashier boxes and bigger claims and a bigger price tag, people'd buy it.

Their entire product is marketing. The rubbery outter layer, the thick rugged feel of the jack, the shiny cover, the reputation of TEH BESTEST, FastAr-Than-SRT-4 product.

Marketing is not just ads and posters.

That's not deceptive marketing, that's uninformed salespeople at work.

Gold is chemically inert and thus does not corrode the way steel or aluminum will. It also has very good conductive properties. THAT is why companies use it to plate their cable connectors. It improves the SNR of whatever electrical data is being passed.

Will you or I notice a difference? Ceteris paribus, prolly not. But it's there.

Monster Cable = Highest profit item for Best Buy and Circuit City.

I think I remember seeing a monster cable 8 gauge car amplifier install kit for the low price of $199.99

You obviously had a few Physics and Chemistry classes

Uninformed salsmen actually help Monster Cable make money. 0.01g of gold plating goes a long way in cable world.

Yeah, but it's indirect. Monster Cable isn't going around lobotomizing Best Buy employees, they're stupid to begin with.

If you look at Monster's ad copy, they justify the higher prices with cable technology designed to reject interference (cable shielding and such) and minimize signal loss/frequency shifting. It's more than just plating your connectors with a little blang-blang.

If you ask me, Monster Cable isn't as bad as some others. Look into Kimber Kable or Transparent Cables if you want to see ridiculous prices. Monster started out as a (relatively) lower-cost substitute for these "audiophile-grade" cables and grew because people actually bought them.

Definitely doesn't excuse them from strongarming people in completely unrelated industries, though.

You had to open your mouth.

I just got a cease-and-desist letter from Monster Cable for doing the Monster Mash.

Oh speaking of overpriced cables... there used to be a boutique guitar amp company named Mill Hill that made a silver cable. 7' cable went for like $1400 if I remember correctly. They went out of business, wonder why?

I have owned one monster cable product in my life, I have a 20' guitar cable. It's lasted me about 6 years now. Think I got it real cheap or free. I don't see any difference in quality between it and the homemade George L's cables, but maybe my ears have just been ruined by years of listening to "dirty" signals through inferior cabling.

I got a reply from Noel at monster cable, here it is

Quote:
It’s the logo slices that are being used, which is like taking the Nike or Apple logo and using it on something other than shoes or computer. It’s also our obligation to defend our logo trademark or we will lose it.

The similarity here goes a little further than the individual letter. They both look like stylized asses.
