Yes only the following OEM Subaru 15" wheels will clear :

1) OEM 15" Steel wheel (From '00-up Legacy, Forresters)
2) OEM 15" Alloy wheel (from '96 Legacy GT or older model LSi's)
3) OEM 15" Alloy wheel (from Outback sport, and Outback)

Me, I bought "universal" 15 inch steel wheels from either the the tyre rack or discount tyres.com with size 185/65-R15 Yokahoma Gardex snow tyres. Only cost me ~ $450 bucks too. These tyres work great in snow.

With the 50 quadrillion Outbacks that have been sold in New England in the past 5 or 6 years, I'm sure you can find some wrecked ones in the junkyard. I think you'd want the '96-98 Outback, which had 15x6" rims. I myself have the 15x6" Legacy L optional alloys (5 spokes, big fat spokes) with my snows on them. I got mine from the Tire Rack with snows already mounted.
