Default wheel offset

Another wheel question: Will a 17" wheel with a 45 offset cause any problems (rubbing, wheel bearings etc) on a 97 GT? I thought I remembered that the stock offset was 54 and that legacys were more sensitive to the wrong offset than imprezas, but I really have no clue.
Oh yeah, on a 17x7.5 rim, would 225/45 tires fit and keep my speedo the same?
Thanks
Micum

if you go 17x7, you want a +53mm offset. +45mm is TOO LOW, unless you plan on fender flares Also, tires you want to run with are 215/45/17 they have a very similar O.D. as the 205/55/16. For the 16x6.5" Legacy wheels, they are +55mm offset.

czo79,

Please don't go with 7.5" wheels especially with a +45 offset. I currently have 17X7 +47 with 215 45 17. Although I have plenty of clearance from the strut I rub the outside fender lip. In other words the wheels and tires stick out just a little too far. The perfect combo is a 7" wide wheel with an offset of +50 or higher. If your going with 17X7s I would recommend the Kumho 712 in size 205 45 17. This tire has a slightly lower diameter, which equates to a lower profile which equals better handling) 24.2" diameter-compared to 25.1". The important part is the section width which is cut down to 8.1". This will allow that wheel and tire to tuck nicely up into that fender well with no rubbing. If you want to stay closer to stock diameter and width go with the 205/50/17. This tire matches the RE-92 exactly.

Hey Czo79,

good comments above ... I dont know what your ultimate objective is in wheels and tires ... but I'm running 225.50.16's Firestone Firehawks sz50 ep's on team dynamics on my '97 legacy gt ... and no rubbing either autocrossing, hard back road driving and on gravel....

team dynamics are 50 mm offset, 16.7 ... tread contact width is 7.5 inches ... and same diameter as stock 205.55.16's ...

... and ... WOW... do these tires and wheels do wonders for driving ... got to drive my favorite 10 mile stretch of undulating, winding back road yesterday (would easily match some of the Vermont roads I remember!) for the first time with these wheels and tires mounted ... I came out of that stretch with my mouth open ... and simply amazed ... and I didnt run WOT ... focused on driving it as smoothly as I could ...

Thanks guys, sounds like my dreams of cheap 17" wheels are...just that. Guess I'll start saving for some p1's...
