Default Eclipse of Kenwood Double Din?

I am not a car stereo fanatic, but I do want something nice to fit in that square hole in my 05 STi. Also want NAV capabilities, and don't want a swing-out and flip unit. So I am considering these two units. Opinions please?

Eclipse avx2494

Kenwood DDX7015 with the trunk mounted KNA-DV4100

Thanks

I'm in the same situation and will be going with the Kenwood. Do a search on here and it looks really sharp installed. Saving the $$ for mine as the combo is pretty pricey.

I stopped by a car stereo installation place and they had one with the nav on a demo display. Very sweet unit!!

Doh, am doing a search now, but what a pain (as well as the time limits between searchs). Sounds like Gixxer is the man about this question. And it sounds like I'd be better off with the Eclipse avx2494. I DO like all the functions it has over the Kenwood. But I will say that the Kenwood has the right color outer frame to match the 05 STi dash, but that don't help with performance. Also have to admit, I like the screensaver/wallpaper option on the Eclipse as well. Can have my car at the races there hehehe

I just got the Kenwood DDX7015 on Friday. Holy crap is that thing ever sweet. It looks like it was stock, it fits in so well. I didn't care about nav. so I thought to go the cheaper route with Kenwood. No regrets at all.

The Kenwood isn't a bad unit, just annoying enough that I'd consider the Eclipse if I had it to do over again. In fact, I was going to buy the Eclipse, but they were mysteriously back-ordered right around the time I wanted to make the purchase and nobody could get them...

FWIW, the nav software appears to be virtually identical across both units.

Thanks Gixxer, and for your other informative posts.

I am going to go with the Eclipse. I think it has so much more to offer than the Kenwood. The main selling point the salesman was using was that with the remote NAV unit of the Kenwood, I could easily watch a DVD (in dash) movie w/o having to remove the NAV DVD. But upon thinking about it now, I would NOT be driving while watching a DVD movie anyway. So it would not matter. Other thing he said was that you leave the NAV DVD in and it won't get scratched and wasted. DUH! But then, this is my first real stereo purchase for a car (other than the JVC double din CD/cassette I got 2 years ago), I'm a noob at there. Just know the other end better (racing, setting up)

Om my bad! It is the AVN that I was looking at, and that is what I will get. Thnx

But darn the the guy at Autobacs sure seems convinced that the Kenwood is the better unit. More power, better menu system, higher resolution on the screen . . . . . . HELP!!!!!

I have to admit, I really like the idea of the nav stuff having a dedicated drive. I don't watch movies while driving either, but on a long trip you may find that your passengers want a movie, while you need nav. I believe the Kenwood also has voice control, which Eclipse doesn't offer. Yeah, it's a gimmick but a pretty impressive gimmick

In terms of functionality, the Kenwood may actually have more features than the Eclipse. The problem is, they're buried in the interface and the Kenwood manual does a terrible job of explaining them! Lots of add-ons for the Kenwood, too (TV tuner, 5.1 decoder, Music Keg, Sirius radio).

I'm pretty happy with the unit, but I mostly use the DDX for nav and volume; everything else is either XM or iPod.

I'd go Eclipse but maybe that's just me. I've never been impressed with Kenwood in general..

i have the kenwood and its awesome. green buttons for wrx, then you can change them to red for an sti. the fit and finish when installed is awesome. people (not smart people, but people in general) always ask if the car came with the screen/radio in it. i think its awesome bang for the buck. plus i only payed $800 for it, brand new 6 months ago.

Well, they do have both in stock. Going there shortly to see both work before I buy. Guess either way I won't have a bad unit. Off I go now ...................

Well, made my decision, and went with the Kenwood. And so far I am not having any 2nd thoughts, yet. Just wish there was a way to change the wallpaper on the Kenwood, so as to maybe stick in one of my fav WRC pics. Anyone know how maybe????

I've got the Eclipse AVN and its the best out there. It DOES have voice control and works great. If you're decideing between the 2 and debating about the nav and a dvd working at the same time, think how many times this will actually come up. Unless you have passengers that always want to watch movies or will actually be using the nav as a aiding tool in your trip, this should rarely come up.
Also, the anti-glare feature on the avn works really well!!
Either way, both systems are a great choice, but you definately get what you pay for.

Is there anyone in the So Cal area that has the AVN installed where I can see/hear it? I could still return the Kenwood yet, but want to make sure what I really want (to keep). I guess you are right, how often will I use the DVD video while driving? And wouldn't that be a no no with the cops anyway??? As well as a major distraction while driving at night?

But on the other hand, I had heard something about the AVN having a hard drive in it, and that it would keep some of the NAV info going if the disc were taken out for a bit. Supposedly would still keep the route info, but not the POI.
