Default Down at the DMV...

Got my tags today at the old DMV today...

I was a little suprised to get a true "Truck" tag... the lady says, "Subaru?!?! Subaru doesn't make any pickups..." Then she eyed me all mean-like... (as if I was trying to scam her)

I tell the Baja is a pickup with a bed and a tailgate and everything...

She says,"Oh... yeah... one of them ugly cars!"

Then she tells me it isn't as ugly as an Avalanche though...

Upside is the pickup Truck tags ran much less than the Outback "SUV/Passenger Car" tag she was going to quote me for... so at least the "ugliness" paid off to the tune of about $200 saved on a new car registration...

That's why she was so keen on determining if I really did have a pickup...

How about in other parts of the country? Is the Baja registered as a Truck where you live?

Yep...

My old California tags, and my current New Mexico ones call it a truck. I heard, for what it's worth, the CA's are based on the vehicle having an open bed, and NM's are somehow tied to the weight of the vehicle.

Not in Iowa, itís a car they only make $75 on a truck license. I heard that they are thinking of changing the law to say all truck vehicles with 4 doors will be considered a SUV so they can get their $255 a year. That will piss off a lot of farmers, I'm still drying off.

In Colorado, I thought I heard something about a SUT or Recreational Truck classification being considered... I may be mistaken, but there was some talk of creating a registration class for 4 door SUTs with a certain sized (small) bed and low GVWRs and other light duty classifications to seperate the Sport Tracs, Avalanches and Bajas into a more expensive millage rate bracket from the cheaper pickup truck classifications...

Oh well... I hope since I got Truck tags I will be grandfathered in...

Tell that DMV lady there is a reason why she has that no-where loser state job. She doesn't even know that the Baja is cool and all the chicks dig em. And 10mpg better than the Avalanche. ANd better warranty And cheaper to maintain!

Maine=truck.

I finally looked it up and on my registration here in Texas is says "4T" which I can only assume means Four Door Truck. I didn't get the "Truck" license plate though so I'm not sure.
