Default Now I understand more about "The Curse of the Bambino".

Quote:
The Boston Red Sox won four World Series in the eight years Babe Ruth played on the team. They sold Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000 and a $300,000 loan because Boston's owner Harry Frazee needed the cash to invest in a new play on Broadway. As noted since the cash transaction, Boston's inability to win a single World Series Title has been attributed to "The Curse of the Bambino."
So technically, the curse doesn't end with the Red Sox making it to the World Series. They have to win it! Therefore, the curse still may live on!

Although I don't really like baseball, I am intrigued by this curse and in some wierd way, I hope the curse stays. It's probably the most interesting thing about baseball......for me anyway.

Baseball and TV have created the curse as a means of furthering the NY-Sox rivalry. They love the rivalry as it sells shirts and gets ratings. When the Sox were down by 3 games Fox was still trying to press that the Sox could win it, not because they thought they could but because it would keep people tuned in. Now that the Sox won, baseball and Fox are crapping themselves because of the press and increased interest.

my father in law (who remembers the weirdest facts) said the "curse" came from a journalist / columnist who wrote something to the effect "now that the redsox have traded ruth, they won't win another world series for 100 years". Thats how it got started.

there is no "curse" its all hoopla and mumbo-jumbo.

GO SOX!

attribute to a curse anyway?
teams make bad trades all the time. if that constitutes a curse, every team would be cursed in some form or another...

Our father, who art at Fenway, baseball be thy game. Thy kingdom come, world series won, on earth as it is in the Cask n' Flagon. Give us this day a Derek Lowe win, and forgive us our losses as we forgive those whose errors have cost us (like young Billy Buckner). And lead us not into depression, but deliver us from the curse of the Bambino. Amen

YES. I'm just glad the Yankees are out of the running. I don't care who wins or gets to the world series, as long as it's not the Yankees.

The curse was invented back in the 70's, and if you actually read up on Frazee and the rumors about Ruth and the broadway thing, you'd know that the curse is steeped in anti-semitic rumors from the period.

It's crap.

Oh, and courtesy of the Dropkick Murphys website...

Curses only exsist to those who belive in them and the Red Sox do not believe in this hogwash.

I was about to say the same thing. A sportswriter first introduced the term "curse" in the 70's. And Frazee didn't need to sell Ruth to pay for his play "No No Nanette" as he already had plenty of money. He sold Ruth and got some other players which he felt would help the Sox, it just didn't turn out that way.

Yep, and the reason the Yanks got Ruth was becasue the AL President and the rest of the AL owners insisted that Frazee was Jewish, and didn't want to make deals with him. He was actually Presbyterian, but since he was from NYC and was a major player on Broadway, they made a stupid assumption. The Yankees were the only team who would make deals with Frazee, and the Ruth deal wasn't the first or last.

Aaron f'ing Boone

Anyone want to add to this? Perhaps Rodger f'ing Clemens?

You should just worry about Big f'ing Papi, or Jesus f'ing Damon.

Actually, keeping with the trend of Bucky, Buckner, Babe, and Boone, I'd rather see the Cards win tonight, and keep the killer B's away from Fenway.

well this isn't exactly like it was just a bad trade... they traded the ace of their pitching staff and the player that led the league in home runs that year (no they didn't trade two players... Babe Ruth did both).

Everyone is aware of the home runs... but as a pitcher he still holds the record for the longest complete game in the world series when a 20 year old Babe Ruth pitched a 14 inning (last 13 innings scoreless) 1 run game in leading them to victory in game 4 of the world series in 1916. In 2 world series for Boston, he had 3 victories and a streak of 29 and two thirds scoreless innings.

It is really more like if Boston traded a 22 year old Barry Bonds and a 22 year old Curt Schilling for some cash.

He may of had the cash... but there were no players involved other than Ruth. Ruth was sold to the Yankees for $125,000 dollars and a $350,000 loan.
