Default Weird engine noise and terrible gas mileage...

I have a '97L with the 2.2l auto and there is a wierd noise coming from the engine that seems go get louder as I press the throttle. The noise as best as I can describe it sounds like a bearing noise at times, sometimes like a rattling and/or slight knocking. It sounds like it coming primarily from the center of the engine which leads me to believe that it might be associated with the crankshaft.

Has anyone had this problem before or know what the problem is?

Sounds similar to a clicking. You can hear it in the car. When you rev the engine the sound seems to get louder with it.

Only when cold or also when hot? My dad's old car had the exhause manifold bolts stripped out and there was a gap and the ehxaust was coming out over there. Check and try to find out exactly where the sound comes from (mechanics stethoscope).

Do you have an auto tranny? My legacy had one, and it made this horrible noise that came form the middle of the engine, but only above about 20mph. If it does it when it's idling, it something internal. Check your coolant for oil and vice versa.

Yes I do have a 4EAT. Its def something internal. The noise is audible during idle and sometimes while driving. I just had my oil changed a couple weeks ago and I replaced the coolent.

I had my oil changed at Jiffy Lube and they put a bit too much. I'm going to drain some of the oil and see if there is any metal in it this weekend.

Too much oil is bad news. Foaming at the crankshaft can lead to bearing issues.

How much extra? And I take it that it didn't knock before you had the oil changed?

Do you have a CEL?

You could have incorrect valve clearance, worn valve rocker, worn cam, or broken valve spring. However, it sounds like something a little deeper in the block. You said you have a stethoscope, so, locate which cylinder(s) is/are noisy.

Disconnect the fuel injector connector of the noisy cylinder and see if the sound dissipates. If it does, it’s possible you have a worn crank main bearing or worn bearing at crankshaft end of connecting rod. If it doesn’t, it could possibly be a worn valve lifter, cam gear, or worn cam journal bore in the crankcase.

Have you ruled out the knock sensor, bad gas?

I replaced the knock sensor a couple months back. I don't have a CEL. I havn't had a chance to listen to the engine yet with the stethoscope. There was a little noise before oil change but it wasn't like it is now.

Well its just about been a month and I just finally got around to working on the engine. I think I found the problem. The waterpump went up. I'm almost positive that the noise was bearing noise. There is excessive play it. I'm in the process of replacing it now. I just have to reinstall everything.
