Question GM2 Questions

On the vin number decoding thread it says the GM2 is a 2 door impreza 1.8L.
I accept the 2 door impreza part, but it appears that they are 2.2L after 96 is this correct or do I smoke crack.

Also, can somebody enlighten me on the differentials on a stock 1996 Impreza L Coupe?

I want a car I can swap a turbo motor into eventually, but I want it to be fun to drive on the back roads until the swap while I’m doing all the suspension stuff to it.

Any other tidbits of info I should look for when buying one of these would be greatly greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

the 2 is the 1.8L, the 4 a 2.2, the 6 a 2.5... etc...

after 96 they all got 2.2l and AWD as a standard feature.

a turbo motor swap is going to be very difficult on that era car unless you're very comfortable with wiring harnesses between the ecu and wiring the engine compartment.

a n/a impreza is fun to drive as long as you don't mind slow acceleration... but you really won't be too impressed with the acceleration after first gear on any n/a impreza.

Ok, that is what I thought. But a few of the cars on auto-trader where all 1996 and the Vin's had them listed as GM2, but from everything I could tell they where 2.2L.

I'm not to worried about it. Electronics are my forte, and I've got allot of real smart people around me to help.

I'm sure it will be fun to drive. I've having fun on the back roads in what I drive now, and a NA Impreza will let me get the chassis sorted before It starts making power.

Any one have any clues on the diffs I've spent hours on google. Maybe I'm just using the wrong search terms, but I would really like some hints

Thanks Chris

my best guess would be to check out ravensblade-impreza dot net or com or something... that's a very useful resource, lots of info.
