I've been on NASIOC for 3 years now and have watched the vendors and users go back and forth about intakes. (maybe the bigger debate is why so much squabble over a mod that only gives you some extra power in the higher rpms...)
so here is a good summary: The K&N Typhoon thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=590315 Long APS intake debate: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ght=aps+intake the intake faq: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=477393 More from nick about intakes: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...threadid=445364 More debate in the godspeed sus thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=445364 I have a completely stock 05 STi that I've held off on modding. This saturday, at Mach V, we are going to baseline my STi stock, then with the h;=K&n typhoon intake. We will be recording AFR's the whole time. Link to the intake I bought and dyno charts: http://www.knfilterchargers.com/sear...rod=69-8001TWR I’m hoping to get some real undeniable data out of this test and silence some of the 2nd hand opinions that get thrown around on nasioc. My expectations: The K&N Typhoon will give me little to no power gain down low, and 3-5 whp at top. Because in intake tube diameter is the same as stock, and because this intake has an air baffle, I'm expecting the AFR's to remain reasonably close to stock. When: I got the first two dyno slots to do this: 9AM - 10:20AM. If your interested in this.. come and check it out! ![]()

Then, after that, the debate will be over forever!
I'm also looking forward to it. There's nothing like real DATA to spark a discussion. --Dan Mach V FastWRX.com |

I doubt I will be there when the test is going on. But when I had my 05 dynoed stock the limitations of the stock ECU kept my numbers VERY inconsistant.
My first pull was 230tq/235hp, 2nd run..was 245tq/235hp, 3rd run 251tq/237hp..but you have to look at eh graph to really see what is going on. On the higher HP/TQ runs the ECU dramatically yanks timing after that because it hears knock I assume. THerefore the runs where the highest Hp/Tq was recorded, also yeilded the worst curves. IE..A 30 hp/tq drop after the peaks were recorded. I hope the UTEC will at least give me consistent numbers tomorrow |

Your views are common from what I have seen on this board John. Pulls after the Accessport/UTEC are usually BONE consistant with numbers being within 2-3HP/TQ after engine management on the STi.

Summary:
- Car made 12 more whp - AFR's remained the same - The install of this kit is more involved then I expected. (but still not hard) - This is a very good/safe short ram, that perfoms like the maker claimed it would. The car made about 12 more whp! This is excactly what K&N shows on their own dyno plot:![]() All the runs were very consistant! I know this thread is worthless without my dyno chart. I will post it as soon as i get it from Dan. As expected,,, AFR's didnt change enough for the sensor to pick it up! Thanks Aquacow for install assistance! Thanks Dan for letting me do this test.. and most of all, you can all thank ME for spending 430 dollars on the part + the dyno time. Thats almost as much as the ARC air box hahah |

Bone stock 05 STI.
246 HP 245 TQ I did not experience much fluctuation between any of the pulls, all were within 2-3 HP / TQ of each other. I'm very happy with the curve also. Peak tourque around 3800 RPM and its pretty much flat until 5225 (or whatever) where HP takes over and is "flat" until redline. I'll post the plot once i receive it. |

A big thanks goes to Dan, Brian and crew at Mach V/Ultimate Performance Co.
I dyno'd lower numbers than last year...but that is in part due to the different dyno. Last year, around the same time, I dyno'd at Altered Atmoshpere. My numbers were decent considering the modest changes I had made (I/H/E/P); 155 tq and 132 hp. Today, with only the addition of an Exedy LW Fly and S-AFC, I laid down 148tq and 127 hp. Now, I've NEVER seen power loss from either a flywheel or expensive tuning gadget such as the S-AFC...so naturally I was worried. But after talking to Brian, I am confident that my first dyno #'s are inflated due to AA's larger rear roller. UPC/Mach V use the exact same size rollers, so the number are more accurate. Just goes to show ya...if you dyno once, it's best to keep going back to the same place! Too bad I didn't know about UPC last year! ![]() |

Hey Aaron: I still have that rubber trim piece from the top of your air box...the one that lines the square cut on the right side.
I stuck it in my pocket when I put the cone filter on, so if you're looking for it, it's in my car. We'll meet up soon I'm sure. Pics coming soon. -- Dave |

Manny: see, the trick is finding out where John is going to be...then meeting him there and handing him parts/keys/etc.
There were many reasons I was at Mach V today...and dyno'ing my car was not one of them ![]() Oh, and you missed a "C" Aaron. ![]() -- Dave |
