Default lifters

what are lifters? i saw a pic of 4 of them on ebay but i'm not sure what they do, what are they for?

Hydraulic lifters??

If thats what they are they are pressurized with oil and they basically push the valve open when the cam tells em to. Not the best defintion, but maybe that will help?
