Default Stock STi vs. Stock Svt Cobra

Sup everyone, I recently had an argument with my buddies at school, wheather the STi could beat an Svt cobra. Everyone says that the cobra would destroy the STi, just because it has a butt load of more hp. My other friends said that it would be faster than the cobra coming off the line, but the cobra would beat it in the long run. I want to know if any of you STi owners raced any or have opinions on what would happen. Thanks

David

Initial launch.......STi (traction)
1/4 mile........(SVT)
top speed......(SVT)

This goes only for the latest supercharged 390HP SVT Cobra. These are rare. also much more expensive than the STi.

I guess you mean 1/4 mile.I ran one with a cupcake driver and spanked him.But it all comes down to driving. There is like a 1/10 diff in 1/4 mile times in most cases.Just my 2 cents. There are storys here abought the same think you ask search them out.Brad

I guess no one saw the article with the STI vs Cobra.
IIRC The sti actually beat the cobra in the 1/4 by like a tenth. I'm sure it would all be dependent on driver, but the potential is their. They are very even.

If you want a car that is fast and loves mods...go cobra.

If you want a fast car that does it all...go STi

It will really depend on the driver. If you get 2 very experienced drivers, it will be close, but numbers say the cobra is faster. But probably on the street, the STi will kill the cobra on the launch good enough to win. Now, start to throw in some corners, and the STi will absolutely kill the cobra. Throw in some dirt/rain/low traction, and the STi will do donuts around the cobra while the cobra is spinning out.

Again,

390hp, rwd, mabye 15% drivetrain losses
vs.
300hp, AWD, 20%-30% drivetain losses...

it's not hard to see who wins in a straight line.

But in reality, we all know SRT-4 is teh fast4rrr.

Both the cars are in totally diff. leagues. But if same skill driver, the cobra will win by a slim margin.

It was in Hot Rod magazine if I remember correctly.

Stock SVT's have been known to dip into high 12's with a skilled driver. STi is mid to low 13's I think.

From a roll your done.

I think the Cobra's must not all be making consistant power from car to car even when stock. I know the Mustang GTs and N/A Cobras of recent memory have had some problems with inconsistant power from car to car. A friend of mine had this issue with his stock Cobra and Dyno numbers proved it with his car scoring 34hp lower than another stock Cobra same day same dyno etc etc. By the same token an STi makes tons of power one minute and then due to heat soak or whatever the reason is it makes little power. In any case I have beat and been beat by stock Cobras. They are very respectable and formidable opponents. It's an excellent drivers race unless the STi's intercooler is heatsoaked or it's a humid hot day out. In that case the Cobra which is less dependent on it's force induction for power will most likely win. There are so many variables in a race it's impossible to think of them all, but anything can tip the balance of power in one or the other cars favor.

Anyone who claims to know what car will win in a drag race based on magazines has no real racing experience. Ex: A good friend of mine with a stock TransAm WS6 beat a ZO6 at the 1/4 track the other day. Impossible? Obviously not, I bet the magazine racers are dumbfounded. How about this one a brand spanking new Tundra with the V8 option vs a brand new Mustang GT. Both get a good launch, yet the Mustang loses by a car and a half.

Default hotrod mag

i have the hotrod mag somewhere in my room...i cant find it...but i remeber that the sti was quicker in the 1/4mile by like .1 or .2 sec they were amazed because to get those numbers they had to launch the sti at 6k...score 1 for the imports...

Once again, don't listen to magazines, see it for yourself on a track.

New cobras most of the time hit high 12's (stock) really good drivers. And the stock sti's are always in the low 13's.

I have, maybe that GT ws an auto? have several friends with SVT's
Only 1 person I know that had an STi was into drag. With a TBE(1200 bucks) he ran a 12.9. And he goes all the time and belive me this kid can drive.

Traded for an SVT, put 900 bucks in mods with dyno time and put like 432 to the wheels. Then he was deep into the 11's

Traction becomes a big issue as well as how good the person launches thier car.And shifting properly

The SVT is no joke. If the driver can stick the launch its a force.
