Default First AutoX: Any advice?

I'm planning to do my first ever AutoX this Saturday at Coor's Field, and I was wondering if any of you knowledgable local subie folks had any advice. I have a couple of really simple questions, and welcome any additional advice (btw, I've read the beginner faq from rmsolo.org already).

First, I'll be on the stock rubber (RE92s); I know they are badbadbad, but until they're a little more worn I just can't justify new tires (it's my daily driver first and foremost). Any suggestions on pressures? (On the one track day I've done, I ended up at 42 front/37 rear, which felt fairly neutral but was obviously too low for the soft sidewalls; unfortunately it was kind of an unplanned track day and I didn't have air with me, so I couldn't raise it higher).

Second, what's the proper way to mark numbers? I suspect I can get magnetic material at Michael's or somesuch (maybe not?). If magnetic stuff is hard to find and/or expensive, is shoepolish on the glass really acceptable? I assume I need to indicate class (GS), but how about novice/rookie: do I add an N?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,

Sean

shoepolish is no longer acceptable. they will have paper numbers you can tape on, however. Can't help you with the tires since I've never run on them.

I have so autocross tips in my archives at www.ImprezaRS.com/racepage.htm and click the link to archives - the May and June 2000 notes should be helpful...

Good luck - bring water and sunscreen, more important than extra air for the tires!!! There are some lists of stuff to bring, and some info about driving techniques. Run the RE92's at 45f/40r.

What mods if any do you have, what year and model car?

Larry

Thanks for the replies. The car is a bone stock WRX wagon (that info used to be in the profile on the left; I hadn't noticed that it went away).

For GS you are wasting your tires - you need race rubber to be competetive - spend $200 on used 15 wheels and $500 on some Kumho V700.

Even if you DON'T want to be competetive, you MUST save the RE92's for the rain and snow this winter! They suck once you wear them out. By having a decent winter tire, you can get other ones for the summer next year, and not have to buy TWO sets of street tires plus race tires in the same year like I did...

Larry

PS: [edit - "The suck once you were them out" - boy I couldn't speel this morning.]

Thanks for the advice, but I have neither the time nor the resources to get $700 worth of new tires for this weekend (and I don't know yet if AutoX is going to become a long-term pursuit). I'm afraid the stockers are going to have to suffice for a day. I appreciate the comments about saving the RE92s, but they're not particularly good snow tires, either. I know I won't be competitive in GS (and let's be frank: I wouldn't be competitive even with good rubber), and since I also plan to replace the RE92s with better all-seasons in the near future I'm not too worried about saving them.
