dear lord...

the ballast is what changes the electrical signal(i believe it boosts the current??? someone help me out here) and allows the HID bulbs to burn at their operating temperature... the ballast IS the HID system. that's like asking if your car can run without an engine, just a full gas tank and tires.

i'm sure a search in google will help you out here. sorry for the mean response but... well it's just common sense- if every HID system has a ballast... it's probably an essential part.

No. The HID system requires a ballast to operate the bulbs. The ballast provides the high voltage needed to excite the gas in the bulb capsule that produces the light.
Read the HID FAQ at the top of this forum for more info on HIDs and recommendations for/against installing them in your car with various options.

i doubt it's common sense dude. not everyone is a car person. sorry that i asked, but i figured this was the place. i figured ballasts were important, but i see vendors that sell the headlights without ballasts so i thought i would ask, every car comes with side windows, but they arent necessary or essentials parts, just nice luxeries.

again, sorry for the mean response.

they're an essential component, as illustrated by the fact that every HID lighting system won't work without a ballast.

i didn't mean to discourage you from asking questions, or insult you in any way. i'm sorry if i did that.

Those vendors are not selling HID lighting; they are selling HID-look halogen bulbs, which generally achieve the HID colour temperature through use of a blue coating on the bulb. The vendors want you to think it's HID. Don't worry, as fellow NASIOC members, we won't let them get you...

Read the HID sticky for more info.
