Default Question on Front and Rear Diff Service

I called in for my 18K appointment and was told Subaru is recommending a front and rear diff service sometime "soon" Now I looking in the manual and the mysubraru.com site and nothing is in the manual this early. Advice on this? My gut is they are pulling it out at the beginning of the recommended service cycle rather than mid or later. ie recommended anywhere from 15-30k.

Dealers don't always follow what SoA recommends. What's in the booklet is the minimum to maintain your warranty. I believe normal service for the diffs is to inspect at 30k. I don't recall what severe service is. It might be 15k.

I just changed my 2004 STi transmission and rear diff gear oil at 12.5k and I'm glad I did. The rear diff gear oil looked like old coffee. The shifting was much smoother and easier after changing the transmission gear oil also. You should consider doing it yourself. It's not much harder that changing your engine oil and it will cost 1/4 what you would pay to have the dealer do it. If you look hard enough online, you can find all the torque specs, fluid types, drain bolt locations, etc. that you need.

I thought about doing this myself, but I have some coupons and subbie dollars - I have all the info but none of the ambition. (100 bucks for the front and rear)

Thanks for the advice.
