Default Pinging in Impreza

Hi,

I've got a '99 OBS with the 2.2 litre, 20K miles and ever since I've owned it I have noticed pinging with all types of gas (85 aki to 91 aki, there's nothing higher where I live). Does anyone else get more pinging with Subarus than other cars?

Mike

You should not get any pinging at all on a stock Subaru. Your engine has a Knock Sensor and the ECU should retard your timing until the pinging goes away. At the most you should experiance a lack of power. I would take it to the dealer and make sure what you hear is pinging, if it is they should be able to fix it.

I've noticed there is a bit of exhaust pop. There was on my 90 L wagon 2.2 too. what you may be thinking is pinging is exhaust pop, just a thought...

for all these 15k i've been on. I only heard two pops like in the first two weeks or so. That was it. and now to think about it. I think it was more of an exhaust pop, not ping.
