Default Illuminated keyring from 03+ in a 02?

Would this be a possibility? I like em! I want it! I can't imagine it being hard.. probably need to buy the illuminated keyring electronics and a new upper and lower steering column cover?? Any ideas or info?

That thread has good info regarding the delay situation on the keyring. However, considering the dome light has it's own chip for dimming.. it's practically obvious that there would be a chip in the key ring that dims as well. Therefore that guy is rambling about something he doesn't need.

I want info on who's actually done this swap.

Rambling? There are no wires on the RS to support the illuminated key ring. Check out a wiring diagram.
Consequently it may be possible to find an alternate power source for the bulb. For example if the bulb was supplied 12 volts from the brake wire it would illuminate when you pushed the brake pedal. The plastic top and bottom of the column cover may have to replaced also because it looks to cut different then the column cover on a non illuminated
key ring.

What I was referring to was that you won't need a seperate auto-dimming chip for the illuminated keyring since it has one built-in already. The 02 WRX doesn't have the wiring for the keyring either, so like you, I would have to tap into some wires nearby to get power to it.

To answer your original question I haven’t seen anyone try it yet. I have searched here as well as Scoobymods (well several months ago). So unless I missed it ,which is entirely possible, no one has done it yet.
I guess the way to proceed is to buy the illuminated key ring and see
how it works with an alternate power source. The current one gets it’s power through the keyless entry module (if I recall the wiring diagram correctly). If this works then buy a column top and bottom from a car that has the ring (STI).

I have gone an entirely different way. I slightly enlarged the hole around the key barrel and put glow wire behind the hole. I fire up the glow wire from pressing on the brake. Although it doesn’t look as nice as the illuminated key ring I find it to far more useful because I have direct control over the time it illuminates. If you try it please post back.

I'm just going to order a lighted keyring and top and bottom steering column covers and just wire it up into the ignition wires and I can almost promise it will work like factory.. it shouldn't be too expensive for parts..i'll get a quote from Subaruparts and report back.

Great.Let us know. Won't wiring in that way mean you have to have the key in the ignition before it works?

Hrrrrmmm.. perhaps so.. but I'm pretty sure you can tap in before the ignition switch.. and you also have to tap into the switch in the door that triggers the dome light as well so it's not always illuminated. I wonder if I could find a wiring diagram for 03 models anywhere...

Hey,

I don't think that's the right link you posted.. has nothing to do with a keyring?
