Question Hankook winter tire question

OK, so I know these tires have been discussed before, and from what I've seen these tires are pretty well established in Canada and Alaska. But I need some advise on making a decision.

I live in the northeast (Jersey to be exact), and the winters here can be bad enough, so I've decided to go with dedicated winter tires for my STI. Now here's the dilemma. I'm definitely going with Hankooks (good quality, great price), but I don't know if I should get the sportier W300's or the more aggressive W404's.

I'm leaning more towards the W300's because of the higher speed rating and the fact that we don't get as much snow as way up north. Also, the W404's speed rating is categorized under family/sedan even though 1010tires has them under high performance winter tires. Regardless of that, the guy at the tire place was pushing the W404's more because of the more aggressive pattern and the fact that they're even cheaper than the W300's

Anyone who has used (or still use) either or both please share your opinions on them and what you think would be best for my car/area.

I've been on the W300 for around a month now, and it has lived up to my expectations. It's a surprisingly good tire in the dry, as good if not better than the RE-92. And we've only had one snow this year so far, but they handled it like a champ. I don't think the W404 would be nearly as good in the dry, and that's important on an STI. They might be slightly better in the snow, but I wouldn't give up the dry performance unless you live somewhere where there's snow on the ground every week.

I was going to get the W300's but most places i checked were out of them (even tires.com.. they listed em instock but called me and told me they didnt have any and were not going to be getting any).

At that point I ordered some Nokian WR's while the group buy was still going on.

I ran the W300's last winter, and will be swapping them on again this winter. I was very impressed with their linear grip in the snow - great at stopping and starting. Not as impressed with their turn-in performance, but it was still pretty good.

In the dry, they do all right. No mistake that you're on winter tires, but they're not so squirmy that you can't drive aggressively.
