Default Anyone make an upgraded headlight relay harness compatible with DRL's?

I've been reading through all the threads I can find regarding adding relays to the headlight wiring. I've found a couple links to harness kits, but these seem to be universal.

Is there anyone out there who makes a kit specific to switched ground systems with DRL's (in this case, an '03 Impreza TS)?

Thanks!

May I ask what you trying to achieve? Are you considering
adding higher wattage bulbs? Or is your aim to maximize what you already have?

I'm just trying to maximise what's there now. I already have Sylvania Xtravisions in there, and a set of Hella FF1000s (toggled by my high beams)

I don't think I want the high wattage bulbs, although if there are bulbs out there with a normal low beam wattage and a boosted high beam, I might consider those.

I live in rural western Canada (in the mountains) where there is more wildlife on the roads than other cars, so I can actually make use of good driving lights and bright headlights without blinding other drivers all the time.

You shouldn't go above stock wattage on 9007s for either the high or low beam filament. The harness is one limiting factor but the bulb itself is another, the small contacts can't dissipate the additional heat so even with an upgraded harness the connectors and bulb bases may be damaged or melt over time.
The DRL system works by grounding the low beams through a resistor to operate them at reduced intensity. If you install relays to do the ground switching, the DRL function may still operate but will operate the relays which in turn will switch on the low beams, but at full intensity. It may be possible to preserve the DRLs while adding the relays, but it would be a bit of work. I know in Canada you need to do this because of the laws requiring DRLs, down here we just disconnect them.

^So true!

I don't have any definite answers for you, but take a look at this link: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...ys/relays.html. Scroll down to the section about ground-switched systems. The diagrams may also help you.

I have no issues with running my DRLs at full intensity - the DRLs are the low beams in this car anyways.

Mulder; thanks for the advice - I'll stick with the stock bulb wattages and good quality bulbs.

dithergizzrd - I had a look at Daniel Stern's page, but I couldn't tell if his pre-made harness was compatible with the Subaru system. I saw the diagrams and thought about building my own harness, but by the time I source all the parts and pay for shipping, it might be just as easy to buy a tailor-made harness.

If you do add relays and need to keep the DRL function, and are ok with them being full intensity, you should remove the DRL dropping resistor located by the passenger strut tower, and replace it with a jumper wire. It will no longer be needed and will be reducing the voltage to the relays which isn't a good idea. Also bear in mind that since your low beams will be on @full intensity 100% of the time you are driving the car, the bulbs will not last a very long time. Keep spares on hand.
