Default 205/55/R16 to a slightly diff size

Hey everybody. My 92's are about junk and I need some new tires before my 92's fail to perform. I was thinking about going Contiextremes. With that said, I was also thinking about going to 215/45/R16 on the stock 01 RS 6 spoke wheels. Think that would be ok? If not the 215, how about the 205/45/R16?

Is the car in question the '93 Lagacy RS from your car info field? If so, you may have to wait for one of the veterans to respond...

lots of people swap the 205/55-16 for 225/50-16 with decent results - same diameter, so the speedometer/odometer still read properly, too.

Not sure on that car, but 225/50 is a very common size to go to from the 205/55
There are also some 225/45's available.

225's will fit on a 7 inch wide rim? Any pics of 225/45's on the stock 6 spoke RS wheels?

225/50-16 will fit the RS 7" rim better than the WRX 6.5".

A 7" wheel is right on the limit of being too narrow for a 225/45-16 tire. For example,

{{{Edit: Toyo actually specs a 7.0" min. rim for the 225/45/16. The following sentence is wrong, but its what I originally posted===>"Toyo specifies a min. width of 7.5" for a T1-S in that size." End of bad info, the rest is OK. End of edit }}}

Falken lists 7.0" as min. width for an FK-451 in 225/45-16. I don't have similar data from Continental at hand.

All the tire companies are happy with a 225/50-16 on a 16x7.

That said, the 225/45 will provide a significant gearing advantage, and a shorter and presumably stiffer sidewall, although that advantage will be partially offset by the narrower than ideal wheel.

A quick check of Tirerack just now showed no Conti 16's in 225/45 or 215/45. Conti 225/50-16's are available in many flavors.

Falken's all season "512" seems to be available in all the sizes being discussed here, but I have no first hand experience with them, I just happen to have a lot of Falken data handy:

Im looking at Kumho Ecsta ASX's now in 215/45/R16. But the question is, will a 45 series sidewall hold up to a day of rally cross or should I roll with the RE92's until after?

It might be prudent to run your first time on your old tires. You won't be competitive, but if you then get new tires before the next event, your times ought to improve dramatically. You'll also get to see if folks are using low profile tires successfully.

That said, I think the tires can handle it, as long as there are no huge rocks on the course. If you have some off road or racing experience, ditch the RE-92's. If not, maybe you should still ditch them. OTOH, it might be fun to give the RE-92's one final and very thorough thrashing.

One other thing is tire pressures. You'll probably want to run 215/45's in the very high 30's on pavement, but in the very low 30s on dirt.

Where are you getting that information? Toyo's website lists a range of 7-8.5" wide wheels for the 225/45 16 T1-s
