Default 18" rim good for snow?

Are there any drawbacks to an 18" rim on a FWD L for winter driving? The reason Im asking is because I can get some 18" wheels for a killer price for my bro. Are snow tires hard to find for 18" rims that dont rub or cause any problems?

The price of the wheels may be good, but have you tried pricing out a set of 18" snow tires?
Don't know about the sizing for an "L", but if you go with "Plus 2" on a WRX, you are talking about around 170 to 190 bucks for one 225/40/18 snow tire.

You didn't say how wide are the rims.

Operating on the assumption they are wider than stock, save the 18s for summer. You want to run a narrow tire in the winter for greatest performance on snow.
