I'm mounting some Hella 500 driving lights up front of my grill using the radiator mounts. Conceptually, I've got the wiring down, but practically, I'm a little lost. WHICH high beam wire am I tapping, and where should I tap it? Recommendations are VERY welcome.
Thanks, Owen |

Just a little mental note: the Subaru system is switched ground, meaning that it is bassackwards to most other cars. There are three wires at the headlight socket. You could tap the ground that triggers the highbeam from there. I am unsure of the color code right now. You can search, or if I have time I will later when I am not busy.... (dang job getting in the way again.)

(1) Aside from the obvious difference in dual filament low/high bulbs on the my2002-2003 & separate low/high bulbs on the my2004+, the equivalent wiring diagram for the non-HID my2004+ lights have very little difference, one of them being in the way the DRL resistor is connected. Afaik, it doesn't affect how one would conceptually tap the high beam switched ground off the low / high beams. (2) If you're tapping the high beams, then, you can trace the highlighted paths to see if any of the upstream wiring is more convenient to tap. Particularly, the signal path of the high beam relay, or the lighting stalk. Tapping the lines near the high beams' connector means tapping a power line instead of the low current, signal line. Although the aftermarket system's relay should prevent excessive current draw on the signal side of the aftermarket's relay, imho tapping the low current signal line upstream is safer. (3) The second diagram I posted in that thread is when you want the aux light to function as either an aux driving light (i.e. automatically switched on when high beams are on) or an independent aux light, by means of a 2 on-position switch. A fellow member by the handle of brunetmj is in the middle of experimenting with that particular wiring approach for a pair of Hella FF1000s on a my2004 RS. He should be able to confirm whether the approach works or not. |

I was wondering if I could just put the signal side of the Hella relay IN LINE with the switch signal of the high beam relay. I want the driving lights to be switched by the high beam switch AND a switch such that if I'm driving, I can have ONLY the high beams or the high beams and the Hellas, but both can be switched off with the light lever on the steering column.
Also, does anyone know if the wire grommet in my2004's is missing next to the steering column??? I looked down there for a while and never found anything. |
