Default 1st, 3rd, 5th gear crunches

I have heard that there is a TSB for certain 5spd trannies about (I know I have this somewhat wrong) a groove getting worn in the transmission shaft, allowing the gears to move slightly up and down the shaft, generally resulting in a crunch in 1st 3rd and 5th. My friends legacy GT does this fairly often, usually there isn't a crunch, but it is just really difficult to get a smooth fast shift into those gears. I don't know much about trannies so, I am sure my memory/understanding of what I read was wrong....But I would appreciate any help tracking down TSB's or any info relating to this problem.
THanks
Micum

I do not know the TSB number, but I had my car worked on under it. The TSB covered the 2000 Impreza and Forester models with manual tranny. The main shaft nut is "punched" on to the shaft to prevent it turning. Well, the guy who does the punching had a bad month or something, and said nut works itself loose, allowing the gears to move and to crunch against the synchros, wearing both heavily and prematurely.
