Default Question regarding spare tires

Today, I just got my 17" rims and tires installed. What I'm wondering is, my spare tire in the trunk is useless to use if one of my tire goes flat, right? The spare tire is the one that came with the car upon purchase...I could just take it out of the car right? My car is a 2002 WRX.

It's always useful. Your new wheels don't affect what it does and if it still works for its intended purpose. The only thing that would make the spare unusable would be if you installed aftermarket brakes that are too big for the spare tire to fit over. Otherwise, the spare tire is still the spare tire, usable and all. It may just look funny running 17" rims and a spare

Thx for the reply, but how is the small spare tire ever going to fit on a 17" rim?...

I think your big question is whether or not you can run the smaller spare tire with three other bigger wheels/tires on the car, right???

I think for a precise answer, we'd have to refer to the actual tire sizes in question, then look at a chart/calculator like this:

http://www.sstire.com/tireheights.html

or this:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

We could guess an answer, but these charts will give you a real answer, given your actual new tire size.

IIRC (my trunk wheel is in the barn somewhere) the spare tire is attached to the spare wheel. The only problem would be if that wheel requires spare lugnuts.

I carry a foot air pump and a can of flat fix. However, I have another set of tires/wheels, so I can get about while I get what I need from tirerack or a tirerack installer. I don't like to mess around with defective tires or wheels, and I also don't like to haul dead weight around. I always have a cell phone handy though.

I also don't like to change wheels in incredibly dangerous locations. I'd ranther ruin a wheel and tire getting out of a bad location.

Did you ever see the "bad boys" episode showing the Z-car speeding away from the cops on four bare rims. It was like a fireworks show.
