Question 03 WRX AccessPort on a 04 STI???

I have an accessport for my 03 WRX and I'm getting a 04 STI, but want to keep the Accessport

Why can't I just download the 04 STI maps and plug and play!

The hardware looks the same.

Has anyone tried this???

ms3p is correct, sell the AP, and buy an STI one. you might even be able to get a used STI one.

IF you purchased the AP directly from COBB, they might offer some kinda exchange program. Might be worth it to contact them and ask.

hmmmm......

why can't you do it? Isn't the accessport just an interface. No matter how it gets there the map for an 04 cpu is on an 04. the instruction manual of both accessports (03WRX and 04STI) look like the exact same accessport

anyone actually tried to use a 03 wrx accessport on a 04 STI????

I'm pretty hard headed, I just might try it to see if it actually doesn't work

possibly comming soon...

Itwill not work, most likiely if you try it will either f' up the STI ECU, or will just be unable to communicate with the ECU.

The differences in the STI ECU and the WRX ECU is vast. The actual hardware within the STI AP is much different than that of the WRX ECU. I would not be surprised if you could not even download the STI maps onto the WRX AP.

why wouldn't just downloading the correct maps onto the AP work? My friend with and 05 WRX wants to buy my 04 AP. If the maps are available and can be downloaded, why wouldn't it work? I'm looking for an explanation.

originaly posted by Trey cobb on WRXforum:

"The STI AccessPORT looks the same externally to the WRX AccessPORT but they are different inside. Plus, the programming that controls the AccessPORT is also quite different.

Unfortunately there's no easy way to perform upgrades to the existing AccessPORTs, it is much easier to sell them and buy new ones.

Also keep in mind the primary item of value in the AccessPORT isn't simply the hardware but the software that allows us the ability to reprogram the ECUs and do our magic. The "magic" for the STI is quite different than what's required for the WRX...that's why it took us time to develop it.

Cheers,
Trey @ COBB Tuning"

Also a post from Trey Cobb on WRX forum:

"No ETA yet on STI or XT maps. Things are definitely progressing, but it's a great deal of work. For those that don't know, the STI and XT ECU's are nothing like the WRX ECU. It's completely different hardware and programming. It is, quite frankly, like starting from scratch again. Fortunately we're a bit higher up on the learning curve now but it's still a very involved process. Also keep in mind there are TWO processors on these ECUs, not just one like the WRX ."

They are completely different AP's, between the STI and WRX.

Yeah what do they know about the Accessport anyway?? .

Uh... seriously dude, springs for your WRX probably look the same as springs for your STi, but that doesn't mean it'll fit or is a good idea.

04 to 05 should work. but 02-03 AP is not the same as the 04-05 AP

It will not even let you download the maps onto your AP if it is not the correct one. I accidently tried to d/l an04 map onto my '02 AP and it would not do it. It says that is an invalid map (thank God)
Once again
('02<->'03) - interchangeable
('04<->'05) - interchangeable
('STi )- well it's just on its own
('02-'03) <-> ('04-'05) <-> (STi) - NOT interchangeable
