Post Commercials before the WRX: Research paper

I have noticed lately that there are a lot of Commercials with the WRX. Well 2 that I have seen and they play them all of the time.
One thing I never noticed was an RS commercial. I mean before the 2002 models.
I can only remember the one with all of the silver Subaru's pulling up to the hotel and seeing an RS for a split second, am I right?
Well I have decided to do a paper on this.

My question is how did you guys find out about your RS? Obviously it wasnt from a commercial. Auto show, word of mouth, internet, saw one driving down the street?
I need any info from you guys and gals.
Thanks in advance
Z

Before i bought my Subie I had an accident with my Nissan Altima (what a poor handling car)and I wanted a new car. I wanted to buy a NEW '00 Altima SE or Maxima SE. My friend had just come from Greece, and we went to the dealer together. And there VOILA!! There was a brand new MY00 Silverthorn Metallic 2.5RS. First word out of my friends mouth: "WOOOOAAAAAHHHHHH!!! Is this the turbo?"....Hmmmm...turbo? Made me interested inthe car...Was not turbo, but he told me they had BOXER type engines, and it was AWD and this is what got me the most: It won 3 times the WRC. So, I fell in love with it, researched a little on the subaru.com site, and got it in 2 days...They had one in stock, manual, and so, from then on, it was SUBIE TIMEEE!!!! That's how i found out about that.
Oh, and, another thing...These cars were NOT supposed to be made public because they were importing them from Japan, i think there were limited numbers of coupes that made it here...i think in 2000 only 1500 were imported?? I might be wrong, but, hey, that's what i heard.
Later,
tony.

I saw my first RS in early 1998 when I was shopping for a new car. I ended up getting a 98 Civic EX, but before buying it, I went to a dealer to see a Impreza L Coupe. The dealer had this blue Impreza RS on display, and told me everything about it. And ever since then, I wanted the RS. But, my mom wouldn't go for a car that costs nearly $20k (at that time, I was in college and couldn't afford a new car by myself), so I got a Civic EX for $14.9k including tax.

I got out of college, and I make enough cash now, so I thought this was the greatest opportunity to buy the RS. So, I bought it.

There were a lot of positive reviews around the RS, when it was introduced. The limited production never warranted a full blown ad campaign. It's pretty much an enthusiasts car.

I decided on a RS this past winter. Had a horriable snow storm over the weekend and I had to skip work because my truck wouldn't make it out of the driveway(2WD and lowered to boot). I spent that day looking for something with 4WD that wasen't a truck as I am atamently opposed to any big trucks. I came across the 2.5RS. Took me 5 months to realizie I wanted one that much that I'm on my way to getting one... sometime in June
Somewhere along the way I stumbled onto this place and met a whole bunch of cool people around my homeplace... I don't even own one and they let me hang out with them How cool is that? Hey... a WRX commercial is on right now.

Saw my first in a Car and Driver about 3 yrs ago. I thought they looked awesome at first but never really dreamed about one. My friend then got a 2000 Silverhorn Sedan and when I sat my rear in that bolstered seat, I almost had to change my pants. I was in love. I'm know on the verge of getting a 2002 R.S.!!!

I was driving with my sister down in Oregon(Warrenton to be exact) And we drove past a small used car dealer and I saw this really sweet looking front end of a car. I vowed to myself I would get one of those after college and in Nov I got a '01 BRP Sedan. ANother thing is I love the fact that they are not everywhere like the Integra's or Civic's.

I was one of the ones who got sucked in by WRC coverage!

The Scooby (Impreza specifically) first caught my attention in '99 while I was watching WRC on Speedvision. What can I say... All wheel drive, high-speed drift - looked like fun!!

From there I did my homework using the Net and Lemon-Aid guides before buying...

my friend has a 1999 outback wagon and he really liked it. i did some research and played some GT2 and decided i wanted an impreza RS (really wanted a turbo!) but i also wanted 4 doors... i thought about buying an L and adding all the pieces to make a RS but thought that was a waste of money and time. well about 6 months later my lease was up and they just introduced the 4 door RS (saw it on the subaru website), two weeks later i went down and got one. a nice reward for landing my new job! (and that was a year and a half ago).

though I'm getting a wrx (and that's a different story) I was basically going through all of the car manufacturers- looking at their sportier cars and of course subaru has the rs on the website- plus I've heard things about them and also one of the guys I used to work with bought a 99 rs, and i just loved the way it looked (I mean cmon, you gotta love aggressive- esp with the hood scoop)it had good performance numbers compared to the other cars I was looking at (stratus r/t, mustang GT, chevy ss, toyota gts, etc) plus it was the cheapest of the whole lot of them. and to think before I was set on getting a sport ute? shudder but eh what can ya do

Now all I have to do is wait till approx end of the week for my new baby

Great stories keep em coming people.

Also does anyone know if there was a commercial with an RS in it? Hows about magazine ad's, or even articles (Car&Driver, Automobile, SCC, etc.)
Thanks

I have a 2000 OBS and never even knew about the car until my kid was playing GT2 on Playstation. When we were talking about tradin' the old Volvo in on something he kept saying to get a Subaru... blah blah blah they can do blah blah blah... and they are really blah, blah blah... etc. extolling all their virtures. We walk to the Subaru dealer thinking OK, maybe another wagon like an Outback they look fine, but there sat this little silver beauty staring me right in the face with its little power bulge beckoning, and was saying... "C'mon, don't get that big thing, we can have lots of fun together..." It's been a great relationship for a year now, and lots of fun!

My cousin told me about the car. He was like Subaru impreza RS with AWD, and I said a SUBARU! You have to be kidding! Well needless to say I saw the car and pretty much fell in love. The sales man was a real dick when I drove it, we just went around the block 1 time. So it was not until the second test drive that I was hooked. I liked this car more then the other test drives I had (mustang, celica GTS, cougar.) Got to love the beauty of all wheel drive in the winter time.

I don't really remember how I first knew about the RS. I think it was from going to an auto show. I got to sit in it, then did my research at Subaru.com and read some mags. And after seeing Legend of Speed, that made me want to get it more. Even though the Impreza was the bad guy It wasn't a fair race! Who wouldn't win with TWO big bottles of NOS one after another? Sorry if I ruined the movie for anyone.

Well I have my friend to thank for this. Hes been into the WRC thing since we were back in highschool. Then first year of college he was looking at the impreza on a webpage and I happened to walk in. I was like what kind of car is this? He was like an impreza and he also had the STI thing on his wallpaper. After that we were playing GT and I saw it in that game and I was like " is that the car you were talking about " and he said yes. After that I was hooked and finally got a 01 BRP sedan and love it.

I know there were some magazine ads at some point. My friend told me he saw one last year in a mag, I believe it was a red RS in a two page spread. Before that they had some WRC like ads for it as well.

Probably around '98 (or earlier? it might have been earlier, must have been a modified one)..saw a coupe on the road, found out it was a Subaru RS, told my friends I wanted to get one cause it had my initials...years later (2001), finally got a job, wanted to buy a car, thought about a Honda, a Jeep or other cars, went pass a Subaru dealership, saw the RS, talked about it to my friends, thought about buying it, thought it was too much so tried to buy something else..told dealer couldn't afford it right at the moment so stopped the deal...weeks later... kept thinking about the RS, did alot of research (price, WRC history, etc.), saved money... dealer calls back about 1-2 months later saying he tried selling it to someone else but the deal fell through, told him the car was waiting for me...went back to the dealership, talked for about 2 hrs to get it for the price I had in mind (from the research I did), signed the papers that night and even scored a STi t-shirt. Sorry I got carried away.

I apologize for the length. Hope this helps.

Stage 1: My first exposure to the RS was from a coworkerwhen I told him I was looking into getting a new car(Spring 00). At the time I was looking into relatively cheap new cars, but the internet article he provided(which I've never been able to locate specifically again, but I think I've found the same article on another site) was very compelling and the profile of the RS in the picture was great(The one from the brochue were they first mention the 2.5RS).

Stage 2: Went down to Mazda/Subaru/Saab dealer one day to check out a Protege since I had started looking into that or a Sentra. Noticed the RS and started looking at it and the salesman convinced me to take a test drive. It was great. After that I took the Protege(auto, they had no sticks) and couldn't believe I thought of buying something so tame in comparison. The RS was so stable and smooth. So much control. Over the next couple weeks I decided thats what I wanted. I'd already begun saving up but now I nearly doubled how quickly my savings grew in order to afford the car.

Stage 3: Heard WRX was coming. Wasn't initally sold on the new look so still highly favored the RS. Over time(shear laziness and perhaps apprehension about buying a new car) I got sold on the new look and had accumulated enough savings I could get it.

Stage 4: Got WRX! Loving every minute of it :-)

Hmmmmmm..believe it or not..this comes up Quite a bit here locally...Anyways...Remember Way Back When there was a RS commercial but didnt' think much about it til The Great 8 rides came out for 98 and the RS was one of them...(The commercial had Judge Rhinhold going into a Volvo Dealer and asking the salesman if "ALL" their vehicles had AWD...In the background Was a RARE Bright RED RS with the gold wheels..)...But anyways after the commercial and the mag article..I saw one at the Auto Show...Test drove a 98..couldn't afford it at the time...so I waited..then the Great Rides of 99 came out...again with the RS...Went and test drove a 99...Liked the new aggressive front end on the 99..Still wasn't sure...that was April of 99...Went on a business trip in July and Aug of 99..on one of the phone calls to the wife, she mentions that the Subaru Dealer Called to say the MY00 were in...Came home...test drove it, an bought it..

I don't remember where i first saw it. But it seemed that i knew about it when i went to the dealer looking for WRX info. Saw a red one. Parents loved the AWD and safety features, i loved the sheer whoop-assishness (sp? ) and rice potential. bought it the next day. Yeah yeah yeah... i'm spoiled

I think maybe 2-3 years ago I saw how they were swapping the hood scoops to MKII golfs in maxpower (UK). Than at some local shin digs I saw an Impreza and it looked so much better than a Hxxxx. Well than one day my VW take a dump I was shopping around and wanted the best of both worlds looks out of the box or easily upgradable at the same time a decent power plant unlike every 130hp 4 cyl out there. It was down to a few cars one was a mr2 and 1.8t. When I found the Impreza that was it
165HP/AWD/Look good...
200HP/RWD/Looks good (RWD bad in Michigan)
150/FWD/Ok Looking (Lost in looks easy to make fast though)

Also one thing I should add is I love power and looks but I never took really liked the slant sports car like eclipse/rx7,etc great power but I donnu I like something a little more boxy or unique yet fast looking.

The first car I was considering was a Camaro... I know, but I consider that because it's easy and cheap to mod... (and I haven't expose to awd before), after I test drove and set up all the options, I finally realize that the insurence is way too high.
So I gotta find smth else, my first sight of the Impreza RS was a MY98 in a Chinese Weekly magainze's car section, actaully, I did cut those pages out and it's still with me.
Actually, I haven't seen any RS those days on the street, so I only find information of it from GT, and the Japanese VCD "Best Motoring", some rallying showed in Speed Vision and of course www.impreza-rs.com and the i-club in the later days. After seening the Impreza WRX in Japan beat the crap out of hm... all the cars (Really! all the cars!!) I was in the impreza fever!!
so on so.. I got the MY 99 Impreza RS in March 99, and I'm glad that I pick the Impreza over the Camaro

Sping of '00 i was studying abroad in Australia and whenever we got on the topic of cars everyone said they wanted a WRX - and i said what in the world are you talking about. So we finially went out on the town looking for one of these monsters - finially we saw one and i said - holy ***** i gotta have one (accually the most impressive was the WRX cop car we came accross)
so i came back to the states dissapointed to know that there is no turbo here but none the less i was still looking. I originally wanted the BRP 4dr RS - but we went to the local dealer and they had a MY01 SRP 2dr sitting in the showroom for $19.5K with all the nifty stuff (factory sub, carbon trip, blah blah blah) and i fell in love with it. So thats what i am currently cruising around in and i have no regrets at all.

Maybe I missed it, but no one here has mentioned the Subaru WRC commercial. You know, the one with Colin McRae bouncing over the yumps in Australia, and doing a perfect tarmac powerslide around a hairpin in Corsica. They used to show this commercial all the time on Speedvision a few years ago.
