does anyone know the loudness of a cobb tbe (catted) on an 05 sti? i see catless on the database. i originally had the invidia catless dp and invidia g200 catless and it was way way too loud for my liking. i am hoping the cobb catted tbe will be noticably quieter and not draw any unwanted attention to myself (read as police...)

<snip>
Subaru quotes for their SPT exhuast 80 dB for drive by defined by SAE 1470, and 93 dB for the stationary sound level defined by SAE 1169.
<snip>

Hello,
Where did you get this information on the SPT exhaust?

i just switched from the greddy evo1 to the fujitsubo rm01a. And the rm01a is def in the quiet category. according to my radioshack db meter the greddy was ~77 db(a) ~95db(c)
Rmo1a was 72/73 db(a) 91db(c)

those numbers are in the cabin cruising at 65mph. Greddy was broken in and rmo1a is brand new. I don't know if it'll get louder as it gets older.
I'm running gutted stock up, bosal dp, stock third cat

I would have directed you to the database but since you say it's not on there, FWIW, I have the Cobb catted TBE on my '02 WRX. The rest of the exhaust is stock and I think it's about perfect. Almost stock sounding idle with just a hint more boxer rumble and a nice subdued growl when it's revved up. No obnoxious droning on the highway -- in fact, no noticeable difference from inside the cabin at all. There is a nice whistle from the turbo though that I can hear when accelerating at slower speeds (1rst and 2nd gear) with the driver's window down.

Another advantage is the stock _look_ -- no huge 4" stainless pipe screaming 'calling all cops'.

I do wonder if I'm getting all of the performance from the Cobb Stage 2, 93 octane program though. I could deal with a bit more exhaust noise if it would make a noticeable difference in performance. From what I've read however, any increase might be 4 or 5 hp on the top end and I'd need to go with one of the obnoxiously loud 'pull me over' cat back exhausts to get it. If that's the case, I'll stick with what I've got.

Wanna sell the cat-back off your '05 STi?! <j/k>

Anyone suprised at the db reading of the SPT? In nearly every testing variation, the HKS Hi-Power seemed to be the loudest always being around 107-112db at 3000RPM. With stock being around 86db@3000rpm, the SPT is usually described as 'slightly louder than stock'; however all tests had it around 104-105db@3000rpm. Now, I'm not sure how loud 100+db's is compared to stock. All I see it as is 20+ more db's, I guess that's really loud because when all I'm looking at is numbers, it doesn't seem to impressive in terms of loudness.

The only exhaust I've ever owned other than a stock WRX exhaust and a stock RS exhaust, was the Greddy Evo2 on my RS which was pretty quiet. It was louder than stock but a lot quieter than any other aftermarket at exhaust I heard on the streets. If ever I go with another aftermarket exhaust, I'd definately want something louder than it; However, it's apparently 92db@3000rpm (on a WRX that is).

c. All measurements are taken 6" from the tailpipe.
This is what he's measuring. I don't think there is data about the dB inside the car.

I am wondering if there is exhaust loudness difference between STI vs WRX...
cuz...My friend(05 sti) and I (06 wrx) are running exact same tbe system..which is invidia v2 + hks hipower(his) carbon ti(mine)..
for some reason, his exahust sounds louder and deeper...so..STI is generally louder? over wrx?

No numbers for us BPM owners

I've always wanted to know, as I live in Nazifornia. Oh well, I'll keep checking in for updates I suppose. But as old as this thread is, I don't expect to see it.

Even with headers, my TT isn't that loud. The Twister Spec is BY FAR the loudest on the planet, without question. That's gonna be my track axle-back.

Was that with a catted downpipe/ midpipe or catless?

The Feds have to get HIS permission to do such a thing.
Unabomber has higher government clearance than the President, has 1 of 2 keys to the red button, and he has no shadow. He is the reason people say 'Don't look down'. You know that feeling you get like someone is watching you? He knows you know that feeling.

Does anyone know if the Perrin 3" TBE for the 2008 WRX hatch is too loud or possible to stand it inside the car? I am trying to find a clip of the Perrin TBE on a hatch, but can't find any. If anyone has it please PM me or post here. Thanks!
