Default Neighbor's wireless hub is open. Should I pornificate?

His network goes by the name "My_Condo".

I surfed a bit even though the quality was poor and I'd get dropped. I think he's about two floors above my condo.

I dont know why this is such a big deal. Everywhere I'm at in my town there is someone with an open network. I've been getting my internet at home for free for 2+ years.

I have no clue other than to surf and download stuff. But since there's so much obstruction, I keep getting dropped.

I'm no hacker.

unless he's either got other security issues (like an open shared drive or something) or you want to get him arrested for d/ling kiddy porn, there's really not much you can do that'd be entertaining.

actually, if he's running an open network, he's probably the type of dude who hasn't changed the admin login and pw on the router...

I was visiting family this weekend and brought my laptop.
Found 2 networks and had "free" internet all weekend.

Your wireless NIC seeks any signals on the frequency, and the routers constantly advertise themselves. You can "View All Available Networks" using your wireless NIC's software to view all available links and what security they are using.

Get an antenna and you should get better recpetion. They have them at CompUSA for like $30. That is if your card will allow a bigger external antenna. You can figure out what brand it most likely is by looking at the IP address for the default gateway and then get the default admin username and password. Then to can login to the router, change some settings like encryption keys, admin credentials and lock them out of their own router. Then you can use it and they can't, untill they hit the little reset button on the back, that it.

I do not promote hacking or denial of service. I am just illistrating what can easily be done for a little fun.

exactly... there is an entire open wi-fi movement... many people do not mind sharing their bandwith with you as long as you do not do anything illegal. my entire neighborhood is a free wi-fi entry point.

it cracks me up that people seem to think they are the next Kevin Mitnick when they find an open hot spot.

Open wi-fi movement is nice and didn't mean to sound like a ****. But some people do it to share and some do it because they don't know how to protect themselves. At least those in the movement probably change their admin password. You also have to realize that most ISPs don't allow you to share your connection, it's against their terms of agreement. So the people that are sharing it and using these service providers are really stealing.

I'm using D-Link. I get pretty good signal, but I have no basis of comparison.

I use Linksys, not bad. Is getting better now that they are owned by Cisco and new equipment will just be rebadged Cisco hardware. I also have setup wi-fi nets using SMC that have worked well. D-link is good, contrary to what some people think.

Stay away from Microsoft and Netgear.

As a member of the "Nikki needs to go away" club, harrassing you is always on topic.

And it was quite on-topic. If five of your neighbors have unsecured wireless routers, they are as stupid as you.
