Default Cold weather - odd noise - 2.5L in Forester

Ok, this is more of just a curiosity but also somewhat of a concern.

When I start my car and take off I get this odd clicking noise. This is in temps of 20F or below. To me lifters come to mind, but I couldn't say. I'm not real big into engines and all the little things. (did tear down and rebuild a GM 2.5L inline 4 "Tech" motor in shop class though). I'm just not knowlegable enough to pinpoint the noise though or if it could cause damage as it would do this daily both to and from work during the whole winter. The clicking is light but rapid. As well, it only is present when accelerating, not at idle. It goes away as the engine starts to warm up. It also emits from up front in the engine area, not drivetrain.

Lifters.

My understanding is, until you build enough oil pressure, they make that sound. Subarus are more prone to it because of the horizontal motor design.

As long as the noise goes away after the car is warmed up, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The Subaru engines have a tendency to make lots of noise when the engine is cold. I run Mobil1 0W-40 during the winter and it helps with the noise when cold.

It's an '02 with 54k and still within the engine/tranny warranty.

Piston slap, on a stock engine, and only cold? I can't see that, lol.

I may just have to put some 5w-30 in it over the winter. Right now it's 10w-30 and about time for an oil change(but not low). Maybe the Subbie engine just isn't as good at moving the 10w-30 sludge around.

How much wear would this be causing? Is it negligable? Or should I really give the car some time to warm up a hair before taking off?
