Default Downward Directed Exhaust Particles

Do you think directing the exhaust downward instead horizontally out the back end of the car might reduce the airborn particulates???
I'm thinking especially if the road is wet...the smoke might be directed into the water run-offs instead of the air...I'm thinking this would actually be a lesser evil. I'm also thinking that an exhaust pointing downward is unlikely to catch on because its also somewhat un-manly.
This might be a wrong forum, but thought I'd ask...

I've seen that on some German cars. Jettas definately have it, and I think I have seen it on some BMW's, and Mercedes.
