Default 6mt and gear noise on decel

If I engage the clutch and throw it into 1st or second gear while coasting or stopping, and leave the clutch in, I can hear gear wine. Like reverse in my 5mt. Same thing. Gear wine. It may be there under power, but my car is kinda loud. The turbo whistle and exhaust cover most things up.

Does the US 6mt do this as well? Any 6mt for that matter. This tells me the gears are closer to straight cut or not a helical as most. This would definitly would count towards overall strength. I am guesing they all do but would like to confirm.

Either all 6mt's do this, just JDM 6mt's do this, or just mine does this because I have Zero Sports gears in there.

My STi's 6speed sounds like a rally car on a tarmac surface. Its whines and I love it . Makes me feel like Petter Solhberg. Brrr brrrr (insert subaru boxer sound) . I think this noise is normal, but just to be sure check your transmission oil level. And when in doubt call Zerosports.

Ooil level OK. Ok, so 6mt has gears that are closer gears to straight cut than helical for 1 and 2 at least. Thanks.

You're kidding, right?

There is a huge amount of transmission whine/noise from the 6MT. It is "normal". That was the first thing I noticed when I bought the car, and it hasn't really changed.

I dont hear anything on mine, could be that the suspension has made the car a little loud. But I never noticed any difference between the 5 speed and the 6 speed as far as noise.

ebeck; got Group N mounts? My tranny whine was much more noticable after switching to N's. Also, I ran for a month after my swap with no shift boot. A ton of noise comes through there. A little bit of material on the backside of the boot can make a large difference.

Gear whine is normal on the 6mt and the 5mt. 6mt is built to be strong yet not prohibitively expensive. Thus it's very strong, without lots of harmonic dampning etc that prevents/silences natural gear whine.

after a friend rearended me at about 10 mph i experience constant metal on metal and grinding and whining... not so much when under load.. but when i let off the throttle its really bad. i personaly dont think the rearending had anything to do with it but you never know... it also could have been my tire sizes were off and finaly killed the center diff.... any input?

Oh yea! Group N mounts on Tranny. Completly solid. No holes. You guessed it. STi on motor.

Tires need to be < 1/4 difference and even then only short distances. Preferably all the exact same.
