anybody ever use 5w40 oil?

well last week someone came into my work (jiffy lube) in his 02 wrx and asked for 5w40 full synthetic. has anybody ever used this in the winter. how well does it work or how bad etc

Oils that have that great a temperature range typically have lots of additives that help it to generate that temperature operating range. These additives are more likely to break down under heat than the base oil. IMHO, I don't think that its a good oil to use in a turbocharged car. I stick to 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer.

The M1 0w40 or 5w40 is good stuff. Since it's synthetic, it's still a very stable oil. I would probably stick with a 30wt oil or the 0w40 if it gets below 0C frequently, but they'll both be better than your typical dino oil. If the car tends to burn any oil, the slightly thicker weight will be better, too.

i use lubro moly 5-40. I would use 5-30 but they don't make it. It's good stuff. Way better than Mobil 1 IMO.
