Default Starter Problem

Ok heres my deal ... Ive been gone for a while and my car has just been sitting in my garage ... I get home, ready to start my car up and nothing. I figured it was just the battery, so I charged that sucker ... Today, I get into my car, battery working, because all of the electrical stuff works, however, when I try and turn the car over, it doesnt. All I hear is like a clicking sounds over and over again. Does anyone know what this sound means??? And what can I do to fix it ....

thanks alot ... James

Your battery may still be the culprit. It takes a lot more juice to crank the engine than to operate lights and accessories, so a weak battery would easily turn the lights on but may not be able to start the car. Once they've gone completely dead, they sometimes don't have all their capacity any more. Also, how did you charge it and did you have any way of checking its state of charge? Assuming you have the stock battery with removable caps, a cheap battery hydrometer from the parts store is very useful for measuring the charge in the individual cells. You might have one cell that's NG, or it may just need more charging. Also check the water level and add some if it's low, then charge it again. A cell with a much lower water level than the rest indicates a possible short in that cell.
Ultimately, you may need a new battery. The stock one has a relatively low capacity to begin with and isn't worth messing with after it's been run down a time or two.
