Angry Highbeam Problem

My highbeams will only turn on when I'm pulling the light stalk (the lever on the lefthand side of the steering wheel...not sure what it's really called) towards me. If I push it forward (toward the dash) it clicks forward, but my high beams do not come on (although my low beams do stay on). Any ideas what might have broken and how hard it will be to fix (I'm at 36,700 miles, so I'm no longer covered under the warranty )?

Don't be insulted by this, but have you checked to make sure your headlights are on?

I usually leave my headlights on all the time, then once I must have bumped the switch, and turned the lights off, but left the parking lights still on. I was driving around and all the lights were on, but it was actually the DRLs and the parking lights.

I frantically switched the lever back and forth for a minute, then realized what had happened. I felt pretty stupid.
