MY00 Turbo Hood... WTB
I'm considering building a nice project Legacy for the misses and well she needs a hood scoop in order to live with the newer MY00 body style. So top mount intercooler will be the choice now.
Does anyone know where one can get this hood and what the pricing is for it and shipping? I'd like to build a B4 type Legacy, but will change the looks a bit from there. Thanks, Jon

I assume you mean a B4 Hood right? I brought up the question a couple of weeks ago with no nibbles.
Try querrying legacyb4 or Benjamin Tang about sourcing hoods. You could try Dan at vividwireless (he sources Euro OEM rims from the UK) or Jay_UK. Thats your best bet from my POV. When you find a source, lemme know... I'm interested tooo. The other option is to get a hood from a junked MY00+ and have a body shop splice in a scoop from a RS or wherever. Not as neat, but the same effect, and unnoticeable with a good shop. 0.02 Mike2000GT (interested in your findings.) |

I agree that the new legacy definitely needs the hood scoop and the look of the B4!! Good luck in finding what you need. Your girl obviously has good taste!!

From a cost point of view it might be better to get the STi scoop for the Imp and cut and paste onto your hood. Sourcing out such a huge piece of kit would be killer to the bank account. Or just get hooked up with a new front bumper/ spoiler and place your intercooler down by all that nice cool air.

My wife would also like a scoop on her 2001 GT LTD. I've tried contacting a couple of places overseas, but no one's ever gotten back to me. Do you think this could be a viable alternative? from iSR Auto Care Subaru

Probably not a bad one. Although you could source a scoop from a wrecked RS or < MY99 Legacy for way cheaper (prolly get the whole hood for < $290.00. Then just take it to a good body shop and have em cut it in. Vola! Make sure they match the paint good too.

Correct me if I am wrong but...an added bonus (or should I say subtracted bonus) would be less weight with the B4 hood right. Is it made from aluminum vs. the U.S. spec steel hood? The Impreza from Jap. has had an aluminum hood for the longest time compared to just recenly getting that in US trimed WRX.

Hi Guys
No its not aluminium, just good old steel. I imported a MY2000 to the UK, front looks good in smoke grey. Jon |

We just did a custom turbo installation on the Legacy & our body shop did the hood, grill & side markers.
The problem they said with just cutting the hood is it weakens it & can cause ripples. So far this one is doing ok but it hasn't been very long. I can get prices of the B4 hoods, I have the Japanese parts books for the Legacy now so if anything else is needed let me know. I have B4 emblems & Blitzen emblems coming. Pam and all others, I undersand that the hood scoop really looks killer but in the big picture wouldn't a front mount intercooler be more effective than one that is mounted on top of the hot engine? I understand the extra piping might increase some amount of turbo lag for the system to pressureize but IIRC in the 2001 WRC Impreza Soob/Prodrive moved the IC to the front of the bumper to increase performance and air flow into and around the in-jun. Just a thought.
Cheers. PS Pam, that Legacy looks beautiful, could you post some pics of the in-jun bay. Thanks TIm |

FMIC = Turbo Lag (?)
I've been told by a number of people that the problem with a Front Mount InterCooler (FMIC) is turbo lag. All the extra piping to run from the back of the engine bay to the front of the car back to the throttle body is quite a ways (it approaches 7-10 feet of piping... ).
Thats a heck of a lot farther for the air to go just under normal pressure, let alone boosted. The lag wouldnt be that much of a problem if we had a wider RPM band, but when the car redlines at 6500 and because of lag you dont see boost until 4K+... yeah... makes for spurts. I think thats where the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of a TMIC. Sure you get some heat from the engine bay, but hopefully, when you are boosting, you'll be getting some good flow through the IC and then into the bay. As for the Prodrive car, didnt they reverse the intake manifold so the inlet pointed to the front of the car? There are a lot of issues with that: fitment, tuning, etc.\ Another advantage is the simplicity of the install. For a TMIC, you dont have to mess with the front bumper cover and trying to get piping around the engine like you would for a FMIC. By the way, this message is the thinking I used when I talked myself out of a FMIC. Even with the nostalgia and all, the TMIC is the way to go. And now B4 Hoods are potentially available through Pam! Yes the amount of cold air increase from a front mount intercooler is worth even a little turbo lag.. and this is better. But when this car is for 'the wife' and needs to be safer. i will go top mount. This way if an accident occurs.. I don't have to replace piping and an intercooler. It's from a pratical perspective... that and it looks naked with out something done with the hood.
Thanks and PAM, can get me a price on the following: Compelete B4 RSK hood B4 RSK front and rear bumpers Blitzen B4 front and rear bumpers lightning bolt grille emblem So I can decide.. I'm likely going to grab up a used MY00 L since a engine swap will be taking place anyway. I'm also curious to pricing on b4 and blitzen suspensions. Better handling is good, but it can't be real stiff as it will be the daily driver/travel car. Thanks again everyone for your time. Jon Last edited by omahasubaru; 07-09-2001 at 02:59 PM. |

Hi Gumball
The lightning thing on the front is completely standard. The car was a personal import from Japan and is completely standard. If you want some close ups just shout. Tonight I have got home in the dark otherwise I would do you a close up. See ya Jon |

I'd really like to get the proper hood for the car, as they likely re-enforce it better for the scoop. Thanks, Jon |

When they listed Bonnet as $490 that would be the entire "hood" to us Yanks. $500 for the hood scoop would be flippen nuts. Well now to think of it they charge $200 for flaming eye liners! so what do I know?
