Default How Do I Tell If I Have Keyless and Security?

I've still not been able to determine whether I have a security system nor a keyless entry system on my '97 Legacy Outback Limited.

There's a red LED on the dash next to the foglight switch that I've seen blinking in other Scoobs. Mine never blinks. Didn't the Limited package come with a security system in '97? I wonder if the previous owner just put an LED in the switch blank to make it look like there's a security system. Does anybody know how to tell if I have the factory system without taking the dash apart to get at that LED? Also, can I get that switch blank out without popping the whole dash? If I find that it's just stuck in there to simulate a system, I'd like to wire it up to an astable multivibrator ciruit to make it blink.

As for the keyless, I really have no idea. Neither I nor the previous owner had a fob (I'm the third owner). Generally speaking, cars with security systems usually have keyless, so I'm hopeful. How do you tell if you have keyless?

The local Subaru techs have been completely useless in this venture. They don't know anything about '97's it seems.

I guess the only way to know one way or the other is to take things apart. Likely they were an option for that year and model and you would need to physically look anyway. As mulder suggested you might check in with the legacy forum to find out the locations of the keyless entry module an security module and then go look.

if it has a security system, then opening the door with only a key will make the alarm go off, or at least it should. as for keyless entry, if the alarm goes off with just the key then you have keyless entry, if the alarm doesnt go off, you still might have keyless entry, just no alarm

Except if the alarm wasnt enabled to begin with. Think he still has to look.

Asking in the Legacy forum now. My guess was that they're the same. Dunno.

I'd look for the module, but I don't know where to look or what to look for. All I know's I've got an LED in the blank to the left of the foglight switch. It's red and never lights up, blinks or anything.

yeh thats what i realized after i posted it. but looking for te security module would definitely tell you. the impreza one is under the dash on the driver side i beleive, maybe passenger, but under the dash nonetheless and is black with white lettering (go figure). also get an ecu diagram and check the wiring, if theres a wire where the keyless entry pin should be then there you go.
