Default How has the STI wing or any big wing been for you guys?

How has it been for attention from people in riced out civics etc. as well as cops? I have seen a few people looking to trade their STI wing/trunks for non-winged trunks. I was wondering about this, since I am planning on getting the wrc wing.

As the 'wing' comes on some of these cars standard....
dont see how it's an issue.... leave ya car alone...

Personally
I added the version V Sti wing to my GC years ago.
I love it.. no regrets...

side effect???
the poser-wannabe-punk-civic-ricer-type-crowd has always tried to get me to race
wing or not... it's made little difference

what makes the difference is how you REACT to the taunting

It bothers me when it obstructs my rear view mirror vision. Also, when I first got the car and would quickly check my blindspot, I would think somebody was there and look twice.

I like my "medium" sized stock wing, when a car is in the right spot behind you at night, there headlights get blocked by the wing, and I'm not blinded

only drawback of my V7 replica has been a slight loss of vision and its a little heavy. Gathers a lot of positive attention (read: subaru fans and girls)

I replaced my wing/trunk with a WRX "whale tail" spoiler and I'm much happier.

Rear vision out the back seems 100% improved. I never liked the wing. Rally heritage or not, it simply isn't the rally wing. The downforce it adds is minimal (like 60 lbs at 100 mph or something like that) and it constantly shakes and flexes, which also tells me it isn't doing particularly much.

I've noticed zero difference in how it feels or handles at speed. I've had it up to 100mph on a freeway entrance trying to keep from getting crushed by trucks that wouldn't get over. It felt exactly the same as it did with the wing.

After I did the switch, a coworker commented that it completely changed the look of the car. He also agreed it looked better. Another co-worker has an STi, and after he saw mine, he said he started seeing both his car and the wing as two separate entities. At that point he decided he didn't like the wing either and is planning to go wingless.

Another co-worker commented that the $280 I spent to get a WRX spoiler/trunk will probably save me at least one speeding ticket (even though I'm 31 and have never had a traffic ticket). I suspect he's right. The wing (not the car) got a lot of attention from a variety of folks. I've had 50 year old-ish guys driving a pickup wave frantically and give me a big thumbs up. I've had a younger guy in a pickup nearly run me off the road he was trying so frantically to get me to pull over so he could look at my STi. I've had a farm truckload of migrant workers pull up next to me at a stoplight and comment..."heeeyyyy maaannnn.....nice caaaaaar". I've had cops make u-turns to follow me for several minutes (despite the fact that I was going under the speed limit, and my speedo reads high to boot).

Yes, the wing gets attention, but I feel it is rather the wrong type. I'd rather go ripping up a freeway on ramp and leave everyone behind me going "damn...that *car* is quick!" instead of thinking "damn ricers". To those who know, the STi is still recognizable without the wing, and that is fine by me.

As a side note...I like the Legacy GT wing/spoiler. It's sedan sporty and more elegant than the STi wing.

I have the Wings West Pro Wing, I love it and would never think of changing it, unless for a Scoobysport Carbon Fiber Spoiler. Only downsides to the big spoiler are the obstruction out the rear view mirror. It is hard to see the person driving the car behind you. Like previously mentioned it is in the perfect place to block headlights from big trucks which is great. I don't think I would like it if I had the rear window tinted tho. Hard enough to see as it is.

I am pretty happy with my STi wing. No ricers really bother me, cops don't seem to care either. I don't have any problems with visibility. It cuts it down a little bit, but there is still pently of room to see traffic. I've had a couple passengers say they kept thinking there was a car on our ass but it was just the big ass wing in the corner of there eye.

I love my couch (sits 4 comfortably) wing.

Except, the first couple of days I drove my car I kept thinking there was a blue car really close in my blind spot!

Love my STI stock wing. I think the tall vertical strakes do more for stability in crosswinds than downforce from the horizontal surface. Impression from 55+ mph gusts on bridges (perpendicular to travel direction) that was pushing others around but I was amazed how little I was affected. Almost 17,000 miles and I've never been pulled over by the police. Also never got pulled over in my modded WRX during 2 years of driving it. I'm 47 and public roads are not the place I choose to flaunt my vehicle's power and handling nor my car control skills.

55+ gusts??!! Great comments. My car came with some fairly dark tinting, so seeing behind at night is already a PITA. But the attention from thers is the big concern, especially since I have heard of people being targeted by cops, ricers, etc. People getting their wings smashed/cracked while they where parked somewhere.

well no offense, but when I merge, I slow the hell down and let the fools in the right lane, pass by first-- works better IMHO.

Anyways, if yer buddies got a wing he doesnt want, I might be able to snatch it from him....

The STI is much more stable in cross winds at high-way speeds than the WRX.
I owned both cars so I know...I don't like the way the wing obstructs vision, but I wouldn't remove it as I believe it to be effective.

no offense but I cannot stand people that slow down to a snails pace, or even worse stop, on a freaking on ramp. I've been only driving for 13 years and have yet to encounter a situation where speeding up did not work out better than slowing down......to each his own though.

Back on topic, I've got the WRX wing that came with my car and like it. I don't really like the look but am waiting for something nicer to come along before I make a switch. Something between my WRX and the STi height would be ideal.

before my STI came in I had planned on doing a trunk swap because I didn't like the giant sti spoiler.
after it came in and the more I look at it the more it grows on me so I may keep it,

If I do replace it , I will replace it with the STI cabon fiber GT Spoiler.

Yeah, I was hoping that the WRC replica would be a tad shorter. At least to me, the picts I see make them seem a little shorter.

Last week I was driving about 85 mph on the fast lane when suddenly a cop with blaring headlights came upon me. I am very good at looking out for cops in my area but they totally surprised me. So I pulled to the side thinking he got me, but then he kept going and pulled the old beater car in front of my car. hahahaha We were both cruising at 85mph! So I guess my STi wing had no influence which should ALWAYS be the case.

I hate it when I hear stories about cops following STis because of the wing because it's just plain "profiling."

When I first bought my car, it already had the wing on it. I thought to myself, "That's gonna be the first thing to go." But it's really grown on me, mostly because it is hella functional. When I hit 90 mph, the car is glued. I've been up to 112 mph (on a closed course of course) and the wing seemed to really make the car more and more stable the faster I went.

I have an 04 WRX with a Zerosports wing. I get a lot of "small dick" comments from people who drive cars that I hate and who aren't car people and don't know anything about rally cars or aerodynamics. But from WRX people, I get a LOT of good comments. People stop me at the gas station and talk to me about it. It's cool. So I'm keeping it. Probably.

There are some drawbacks. Yeah, rearward visibility is horrible. That's the worst thing about it. And once or twice people have tried to mess with me on the highway. But I can usually lose them. I got a speeding ticket and the cop didn't even want to talk about it. Might have been because of the wing, but who knows. One of my girlfriends hates it (computer programmer), another is indifferent (lawyer). One sister hates it (trains horses in Chicago). The other kind of likes it (graphic designer in San Diego). So consider the sources.

I really wish it had a 3rd brake light though. Really bothers me and I am trying to work out something that I can add that will look OK and not added on. I had neon on my last car's third brake light. Loved it. I want something like that.

To me, the best wing out there is the SYMS spoiler. That thing rocks my world.

What seems weird to me is that it seems like I get more people wanting compition w/ out the STi wing than when I had it. I don't have an STi but I use to fool everyone. Maybe they just automaticly saw the wing & thought it was an STi & didn't want to try becuase they knew they'd get spanked. I do miss my wing though. I'd like to find a MINES rear spoiler/lip for my car, they are different & not common. As of now I'm totaly wingless & may be even looking for an RS hood since I have a FMIC.
