alright. well i have an 04 rs. i have a cobb stage one. (CAI and Catback) i am looking to get more power i will use every day. i do some rallyX and want to do some autox. i am not a street racer, i would just like some more power out of my rs. it would be nice to someday get to that 200whp mark, but i don't see that happing this year. sorry for the first post, i just assume these days that i will get more "we have gone over this a hundred time" "n00b do a search" or what ever then acctually answers. all i want to know is if anyone has just cams. no heads. and if so did you get a gain worh the $$$? or should i just save up and get the heads with the cams?
thanks

You plan on staying NA(non-turbo)? If you check Cobb's site, you'll see just how much the full NA package is and you can get a swap or get a WRX for the extra cost to "potential peformance". Already been there and completing some upgrades on my swap.

As long as we're spending your money then ya, get the heads and the cams. And get them from cobb because they are the most expensive ones.

Going for power in N/A takes a lot of money, and most likely, you will end up with a steep torque curve that isn't exactly drivable on the streets. N/A depends on atmospheric pressure for generate power, which means that unless you put in technologies to maximize air flow across the RPM range, you will be making compromise. 200 whp takes a lot more money in N/A compared to going turbo, and you're not going to get there without jacking up the compression ratio => you need more fuel to prevent a motor blowing up. Without AVCS, you don't have much technology on your side for much more power in N/A.

As I have said in the other thread as well - figure out your end goal, and see if it's within your budget to do in N/A (which I seriously doubt). You might gain about 20hp when you're done with all the lower priced mods, and to go further up you're in for the big bucks. I figure that with any USDM Subaru, if you wanted a bit more power, you're going go turbo in some shape or form.

Kgb, thanks. i know the benifents of a turbo. and i might choice that road down the line. but right now all i am asking is if i just buy cams will it make a difference, if so how much? i full understand that my car will never be fast unless i drop tons of money and at that point i should just buy a WRX or STI. either way turbo or NA cams would be one of the things i would need (right?) so... with that said. can i buy cams and FEEL some gains? or do cams and heads work hand in hand?

i am assume i might need a bigger fule pump and a way to tune.

as i said in the other post, cams will work GREAT with out heads. Just ask Matt Monson. Do a search of his threads, he has a dyno sheet where he made 151.8 whp with stage 2 plus spicey cams.

If you are going to stay N/A, then get the Spicey cams because they are better and plenty streetable. they will get you a great gain for the money. check out Delta Cams. The street cams are a good choice if you plan on later going turbo.

before you get cams, I would get equal length headers though. they will allow the cams to work much better. I'm stage 2 right now, and I plan to either get cobb spicey, twe stage 2, or delta cams.

well first make sure that it works with the 04s cause cobb designed most that stuff for the 00-01

um id get headers, least cheap borlas so the car would sound really hot with the cams

and your not a noob for asking a question

its nice to see him actually get responses instead of people saying SEARCH. we are here to help each other. asking a question is the only way to get an answere.

good job us.

if you have no money and still have stock cat, start there. the catalyser part are know to be the most restrictive part of the original exhaust system. others mods will not give their full potential until the stock cats aren't replaced with something more flow-friendly. if you do autoX, broad torque is an advantage over peak HP. going with spicy cams might not be a good idea. for drag and road-racing it would be OK, but for low-speed-many-curbs, torque is the way to go. the stock exhaust system is very poorly designed. the first part of it really s**k. the stock headers do not make the cylinders help each other in any way, and like I said before, the dual cats is very restrictive. I would start there is driveable power is what you want.

Don't want to be the party pooper but you said you wanted to auto x your car ? You understand that cams put you in street mod as far a SCCA classing goes . Just my .02 but befor you go modding you may want to try and see what exactly you want to do with your car befor you get outclassed by a honda with a b18 swap at an auto x .

You will be outclassed by EVERYTHING in SM.

Spicy cams are not going to be very friendly to drive around town unless you get an equal length header. Under 2000 RPM you will be checking your parking brake.

With equal length headers, you have a very nice street driving car with spicy cams.
