Where do u guys order your OEM oil filters. When I owned an SE-R, I used FRAM oil filters but I was told that OEM is always guaranteed safer because of the drain-back valving. Not sure if the Legacy oil filters use that. I'm asking because I want to order in bulk of 10.
Thanks.

The OEM filter is made by Purolator, in the USA. You can buy them at any of the discount auto parts places for $2.99. It is identical to the OEM filter, only the paint is different. Go buy an OEM filter and a name brand Purolator and compare, inside and out, you'll see.

I order my filters by the case from Troncalli Subaru in Roswell, GA. Call 1.800.334.4717 and ask for Lisa in parts. Last time, I think I paid $35/case of 12, including crush washers, and she ships free. Their prices are so good that after a recent fender bender, I saved $700 ordering parts through her instead of letting the body shop do it. And they arrived quicker - they're right next to a regional warehouse.

There is one called the Purolator pure-one it is the newest filter for the subie engines. I use to use them but now I use Amsoil (SDF-36) which is bigger by 1 inch and lasts over 6,000 miles. It seals well also. Hope this helps

Hey Echo, you may want to reconsider running the bigger filter. The recommended Amsoil filter is the SDF-20. I also was running the SDF-36, based on someone else's tip. They are indeed the same OD, gasket, and thread. The SDF-36 is over 1 inch longer, which would be a plus. My "Product Guide" book also showed them to both have a By-Pass valve rated at 8 psi. After a short period of time, however, I received and addendum to the manual with some corrections. One of those corrections was to the SDF-20 oil filter. Apparently the By-Pass valve is actually rated at 18-20 psi, which is a big difference than the 7-9 psi that the SDF-36 is rated. What all that means, in an over-simplified explanation, is that the oil will bypass the SDF-36 filter when there is about 8 lbs of 'resistance'. Whereas the SDF-20 doesn't bypass the filter until about 19 lbs. Based on that much of a difference, I decided to switch back to the recommended filter. Just so you know.

richeich, I have read other posts by U and respect your enjoy your recomendations. The problem is I've told my friends and higly recomended Amsoil to them. I got a 6-8% increase in milage from the stuff.
Am I a Fool? Should I quickly rescind my earlier comments about the wonders of Amsoil's larger filters? I feel bad about this Anyway U're more of an expert than I am, but my question is:1) What is the psi of an 2K 2.5rs Impreza's oil pump? And how much can it vary? 2) Wouldn't the larger filter displace more fluid because of it's larger capacity, (not sure) I thought PSI in a container would change due to a change or increase in volume? i.e. ... A two inch filter would hold fluid @ 15psi if U were to increase that filter to 3" (all else constant) it could hold the fluid @ 10psi. The flow of fluid is the same but filter is bigger and the bypass valve is weaker but since the filter is bigger it will allow more fluid to pass through the "filtration media". I know I'm grabbin at straws but please help.... I like the huge filter it is nice and big, and helps with cooling. Thanks Gill (EchoWrx) |

No Gill, you're okay. I didn't mean to make it sound like that. The Amsoil filters are great for extended drain intervals, and you'd be wasting your money if you changed them out at shorter ones, no matter which Amsoil filter you use.
I had received a pm from someone a while back, before the changeover, that told me that the Subraru Purolator filters were rated at approx. 21 or 22 (I think). That message has been lost now, so that's off the top of my head. Apparently, the Subies oil pressure can run higher than 100 psi at startup. I can't remember what they idle or run at. Maybe someone else can tell us. You may have a point about the larger size/lower pressure theory. Someone smarter than me may be able to confirm that or correct it. I'm just not sure. Amsoil will repair any failures to your engine if their lubricants were the cause of it, and if you follow their recommendations. Since they have the SDF-20 listed as the recommended filter, as an Amsoil Dealer, that's what I need to use and recommend. That's just to protect my customers and myself. Gotta get to work- take it easy Rich |
