Default Effectiveness of rear spoiler/wing?

I'm debating this - some people tell me that a wing such as the STi or even the WRX wing makes a big difference from 40mph up, my personal experience with my S2000 showed that it was a drag (literally) and really not needed since I don't drive at 100+MPH all day. However, lately I've been tempted by the new JDM STi's wing and also the replica JDM CF wing. I wonder those of you with wings/spoilers: does it really make a difference?

I removed my STi's wing and replaced it with the standard WRX spoiler.

I'm much happier, and I've detected no difference the way the car feels or handles.

In my opinion (and I'm a practicing (employed) Aerospace Engineer) you are correct, its more of a drag. Someone on one of the threads did a nice calculation to show that the wing only produced about 60lbs of downforce at 100mph. On a 3200lb car, that isn't too much.

The fact is that the stock STi wing is a production "replica" of the WRC wing, but they simply aren't the same.

Apples and oranges, maybe, but I took my stock WRX spoiler off and installed a Mine's (replica) example. It's been about a year now and I have noticed no ill-effects. For what it's worth, I had my car at a track weekend at Mid-Ohio earlier this year (with the Mine's spoiler in place) and the car felt stone-solid.

For everyday driving, it won't make a difference. In fact, it might slow it down a little....I remember reading a thread about this. Someone said that their car was slower than a friend's who didn't have a spoiler (in a straight line).

Wings are for the bling factor only.
