Default head gasket sealant longevity

Our 1999 Forester had the head gasket sealant added in Feb 2004 at 50500 miles. It started leaking worse than originally on 12-20 at 57000 miles. The dealer replaced the head gaskets under warranty. Can the head gaskets be replaced without removing the engine? Thanks.

If it's the SOHC motor, yes they can. However, it would be easier to remove the motor. You'd be surprised how easy it is to pull a motor.

Yes, it is the SOHC engine.

Thanks for the reply.
