Ported heads alone won't make you breath better on the top end. Go with a set of cams that will orchestrate the filling of the cylinders at redline and you'll be set.

However if you're talking about raising the rev limiter, that would probably be needed if you upgrade to a big turbo or higher duration camshafts. Then you could upgrade to titanium valve springs to prevent valve float. Raising the rev limiter would probably benefit drag racers that run huge turbos that don't get full boost until 5000rpm, those massive turbos usually want to keep pullling and pulling past redline. But hey what do I know, i'm a n00b
actually, if you wait until 7k to shift with the stock turbo you put the car out of it's power-band, thus making less power... Just my .02 cents...

Even in second gear, when the car doesn't build boost nearly as soon as your 4th and 5th gear dyno pulls?

still at 7550 limiter. car just rolled over to 34k on the 100% stock longblock. Been about 10k at this redline, and 4k at ~7300 before that.

Sooooooo,

BTW, I love this thread for whatever reason.

I have some datalogging I need to do cause I have a small issue with my tune. I'm going to ask my tuner to bump up my redline to 8k from 7550.

Still on the OEM engine, 41k miles.

Let's see how long she lasts. I have the money and *most* of the parts to replace her when she blows.

*crosses fingers*

Hopefully the 8k tune will be in it by the end of next week.

I got 46K out of mine revving it to 7600 I'm sure it's seen more from me FFS with out it actually enabled lmao..

Non the less my car's apart. Burned massive amounts of oil. But it's still possible it was another issue besides a ring land. I'll come back and chime in when I get the time to actually get the motor apart..

I have my 04 STi 2.5l redline set to 7500. I am running an 18g, CP pistons, and stock STi heads (just freshened up with a good 3-angle valve job, and clearances on the valve buckets reset). I don't really need it except in some portions of some autocross courses, when it would not pay to upshift, but the little extra rmp can really help. The power really falls off past 7200.

I would love to be able to spin up to 8k, but I would need rods and springs, and even then I suspect cams would be necessary to really be able to breath up top....

so what happen?. I am reving to 7300rpm on first gear.

I have money shifted when I got my car 3 years ago twice, I probably rev to 9k on those occasions . Stock valve train with BC272 cams.

I've been lazy. Still at 7500.

I really, really, really just need to get my ass off the couch and get to datalogging my car. I just drive the darn thing.

It's nice to not have to mess with it.

I really need my soft limit higher for launching in 1st.

I have "spinned" a couple of times up to about 7k on my stock block/heads WRX without issue. I don't make it a habbit however! Maybe 3 or 4 times....

My power mods setup:
TXS FMIC, & BPV, & CAI, Borla catback, Invidia DP, NGK plugs, 850cc injectors for the bigger turbo I'm installing soon),walbro of course!, GS 3prt BCS, VF48 (soon to be for sale). Not a power mod, but I run full synthetic Castrol 5w20 after switching from RP after my first and only dealer performed oil change.

My tune: E-tuned by Clark on AP.

Future Mods: 20G, AOS, dyno tune, and more cowbell.

I spun it to 7500rpm for a while.... It seems that the stock valve train can take 8k but the shortblock assembly needs to be balanced..

Since this thread is about redlining past 7k I wanted some opinions on my setup and running to 8k. Long story short I had a 05 wrx motor in my 98 rs with the factory drivetrain and spun some bearings in the ej20. Now I'm doing a hybrid with a 2011 sti short block an throwing in some mahle pistons (4032s). I'm currently having the heads machined and having the chambers matched. Also putting in crower stage 3 cams ( not bc) with titanium valve springs and retainers. Looking to get a gs 44mm ewg up pipe and a gs cross pipe, I already have a vf39 and a set of 565cc injectors, 11mm oil pump, spt intake, gs mbc, 3" tbe, and ap hard inlet. Plus a pro tune. Now I will ask my tuner when the time is ready but I wanted some input. What do you guys think this set up would be capable of. Redline, the old setup redlined at 7k but I would end up going through my gears like crazy. Most would get me off the line bc of the quick shift out of first and I would end up playing catch up in second and start passing in third/ pulling in fourth.

XT6 hasn't posted in about a year... anyone know how that 8k limit worked out for him?
